Disabled Travelers

I am going to Paris with my 84 year old mother. Although she is very spry for her age, the Metro steps are daunting. We don't want her to be worn out just getting to the sites! Cabs seem an obvious option, but pricey, I assume. What do cabs cost? Are there any Metro stations with esculators or lifts? Is there an easily navagational bus system? Any ideas? Thanks,
Tracy

Tracy,

As I recall, many of the metros DO have escalators--especially near the major sights. I don't know cab prices as I either took the metro or walked.

The bus system in Paris is excellent. Get yourselves a bus route map (or download one at rapt.com). The buses are easy to board and Parisians are very good at giving up their seats to the elderly and/or infirm. This past spring in Paris I was using a cane due to an ankle injury and people were quick to offer me a seat. I was very impressed.

Good idea about the buses-take them when you can. But do not avoid the taxis because you fear the cost. THe price is not that bad. We had rides for the four of us that ranged from 4-5 euros to 10-12 euros. Remember that while she may be ok for those stairs down and back up, that may reduce her tolerance for other walking and standing that day. Some metro stations may have escalators, but they may be going the wrong way for you, and they may only be for PART of the stairs. You may have several other flights to contend with. Spend a little more money, skip the stairs, and enjoy the trip.

One thing to note regarding escalators: The last time I was in Paris (~seven years ago), it was "Stand on the right, walk on the left". In other words, do not stand side-by-side.

See "Travel Insurance" topic on this board. Don't leave home without it for your elderly travel companion.

Travel insurance is a must for someone 84, but I even get insurance for myself!
My Mom is 87. We were thinking of going on an Alaska cruise together. The insurance for me would be $79, and for my Mom $350!! I would imagine insurance for an 84 year old for Europe would be very expensive, but worth it! My Mom decided not to go on the cruise or any trip anymore. She's even in good health for her age, but is afraid to travel now. Lucky she lived in Rome Italy for a year and been to many countries. That's why I want to travel now, before I get too old.
I would take taxis if I were you like Karen said. Make it as easy as possible, because Paris can get overwhelming for anyone at any age!

Although some metro stops have escalators or elevators many do not, or they will at the station you depart from, but not at the station that you alight from, so make sure both stations do. I found some stations involve alot of walking, and alot of stairs.

We took taxis a few times, later at night, or when the kids get tired out.
It never was that much to me, I mean if 8-9 euros saves you 1/2 hour of walking when you are tired and hungary its worth it to me. Taxis do have minimum charge of 5 euros I think.
Honestly , its your mom, spend the money on her to make it as easy as possible. As noted, sure she may be fine getting to the museum on the metro, but now she has to walk around the museum for an hour or two,, its better to start fresh.
