Dinner in Hallstatt or Chiemsee area

We have a day trip planned to Chiemsee and Hallstatt, looking for recommendations on what area would offer better options for dinner, we will be leaving from Munich and returning to Munich, same day.

I assume you are driving. ViaMichelin gives the driving time from Munich to Hallstatt as 3 hours (+/- depending on whether you go through Prien a Chiemsee). And it will take you at least an hour round trip, depending on how long you have to wait for connections, from the harbor to Herrenchiemsee. So I'm seeing at least 7 hours travel time*. I spent an afternoon and a full day (2 nights) in Hallstatt, and touring the palace at Herrenchiemsee will take a couple of hours. Don't even consider this as a day trip.

Thanks Lee, helps with the planning on the front end of the trip versus reacting while on the trip

In my experience the tour of the palace at Herrenchiemsee is fairly short, but as you have to wait at the pier, cross the lake on a ferry, wait at the ticket office, walk to the palace, wait at the palace entrance and then do it back in reverse, it takes several hours to visit the palace. If you can manage to get on the 9am ferry, that is relatively uncrowded, it is an huge help, but it means that you can expect to be back, say, around 12am at best.

Consider two hours driving between Munich and Salzburg (an highway stretch where queues are frequent), one hour and half between Salzburg and Halstatt. This means that IMHO you are committing to seven hours driving, four hours touring, plus the time you are spending in Halstatt. I wonder if a single day is enough.
