Destination Wedding Location Help - Based on Dessert

My main squeeze and I just got engaged in Bosnia, and are now talking about wedding plans. We'll be getting married in Europe, but the destination is up in the air.

We've come to the conclusion that the most important part of any wedding (except the vow to take each other until we tip over part) is the cake. That said, we've decided to base our wedding location on who has the best desserts.

If any of your travels have led you to a location with a stand-out cake opportunity, please let us know - our future is in your hands...

Thanks for your help!

Before you start planning the dessert, you might want to take a look at the requirements for getting married that each country has. Some European countries will not allow you to just fly in and get married. Some have legal formalities what require a lot of time to complete. Start looking now so you won't be disappointed.

After you find out where you CAN get married, then it is time to decide on the dessert. Good luck!

I agree with the first post. Consider that you might need to make it a destination "reception" rather than a destination wedding. That said... Scotland is marvelous for weddings. But for cake- Austria!!!!!

I have ordered wedding cakes for various clients. in Italy, Scotland, from London, and in Paris (and Nice) They all were pretty good, fancy, different, some what you see in the US and some unique. The one thing they all had in common was that I had to meet with the pastry chef/bakerys months in advance to let them know what my clients wanted specifically. and then follow up with pictures and signed contracts, and money. Even in the US most wedding cake people want a few months in advance and will want to meet with you or have exact pictures before hand.

But this is for individualized and grand wedding cakes, (keep in mind I worked for millionaires) your needs may be different.

As far as who has the best desserts, that all depends on your style. France and Austria are going to have some traditional pastry types. But you can find these chefs all over Europe.

But all the above posters are correct you will need to verify your residency requirements before planning a wedding.

Thank you for all of these suggestions! We are in the process of narrowing down countries we are able to get married in, but would really like a good cake to go along with the reception.

We were recently in Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, and Montenegro, and had a lovely cake (kremna rezina) in Slovenia. This cake appears to be a specialty of Slovenia, and we are looking for other suggestions of cakes that may be localized to a certain area.

Our wedding is going to be very low-key (could be just the two of us, for all we know. When you have a destination wedding you have to keep a low expectation of who will be able to make it). Our passion is travel and we are very open-minded about the location. Austria keeps popping up on the radar, so perhaps a little more research is an order...

Thank you - all suggestions welcome!

My personal favorite is a Black Forest Cherry Cake (Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte.) My Bavarian mom has made these for me for my birthday for as long as I could remember. I don't know if I have a particular bakery I would recommend, but it is locally available in that part of the country.

I really admire you. So many young couples today skip the wedding and go straight to the dessert:) LOL.

Well, Brad, we DO have our priorities... :)

Thanks again for all of the suggestions, looks like a Dessert Tour of Europe is going to be required for this task. Good thing we'll be doing a lot of walking...
