Delta airlines fare drop

I am traveling to Europe in September with Delta. I booked my ticket a month ago at a fare that I was less than happy about. I checked today and the fare has dropped $135/ticket, not huge but its something. I cancelled and rebooked and now I have a couple small ecredits.

Folks with booked travel with Delta for fall may want to check for a drop in fare.

Last year I had my fare drop by $178. I messaged them and they cancelled and rebooked me, same flights and seats, and gave me an ecredit for the amount of the difference. You can actually do it yourself, but I had upgraded several of my seats and didn't want to lose them. It's worth a try.

@Leslie, I just did it myself, but it is a little nerve wracking. I cancel and rebook, and I'm always nervous the fares/availability will change prior to completing the rebooking. I did have some trouble because somehow the website didn't want to use my husband's ecredit. Finally, I could access both ecredits, and I rebooked and actually got the same seats. Next time, perhaps I'll try to message and get them to do the work.

Jules, thanks for the heads up! I had just heard that flight prices might be going down for the fall. I was feeling perturbed that I had already bought our tickets! Didn’t even think about possibly getting a change in rate…. So that will be my challenge to get the money back… my fare difference isn’t as much as yours, but I also wonder if it will change any further before the fall?

In any case, I appreciate you sharing this info.😊

@jules m Thanks a million for this update. It took 1-hour on the phone but I now have a huge credit on my Delta account PLUS I was able to upgrade to Delta One using a global upgrade. WIN! All because I read your post and called Delta to make a change.

Thank you Sue, for reporting back! Glad I was helpful to someone. I noticed that the rates for my flights are still at the lower fare.

All Delta tickets can be cancelled for an e credit. Check the website for details.

EDIT: oops! Not Basic Economy, see the following posts for details and as above, check the website and read the fine print.

I had a main cabin ticket which is changeable or cancelable for an ecredi..

Basic economy tickets are not changeable or cancellable.

A few weeks ago, I mistakenly booked flights(domestic) for the wrong days, but when back within 24 hours and rebooked the same trip with new dates. I had to pay a little more, but it was great that I didn't lose the entire purchase.

To Gail's comment about Basic Economy.. I was curious because Delta has changed their policy on this several times. In checking their website, they have varying policies depending on where flight originates, and they sure make it confusing / hard to find clear info. But I finally found this:

"Basic Economy tickets cannot be changed in most cases. However, you may cancel a Basic Economy ticket issued for travel originating in the United States or Canada for travel to the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico for a cancellation charge of $99, which is deducted from the value of your ticket. For Basic Economy travel originating in the United States or Canada to any other international destination, the cancellation charge is $199."

To Tom's comment above (now removed), looks like that rule has changed since his experience. Delta website now says "For travel originating in Europe for Main Cabin and above tickets, there are no change and cancel fees. For Basic Economy tickets, the cancellation charge and change fee is €200."

I guess the bottom line is - read the fine print when buying; policies can and do change and unfortunately can be quite confusing. And of course, you always have 24 hours to cancel and get a full refund regardless of fare class. Enjoy your travels!

Before I posted I double checked the Delta website. It is pretty vague in regards to cancelling / changing basic economy. Basically it said under most circumstances, not changeable or Cancellable.

I did find the Thrifty Traveler article where it discussed flight origin.

I sure am not willing to tell someone the Basic Economy tickets are changeable. I’d call Delta where you probably will get different answers from each agent.

Great news that airfares are down slightly.

Too bad hotel rooms in the large cities are not dropping their rates. They've just about broken the camel's back presently.

My wife has a talent to find the cheapest airfares in the middle of the night, and we most often travel at 50% or less than what most people are paying. Our flights last month were purchased from Air France in Europe--knowing we'd fly on Delta.

Just booked a multi-city itinerary on Delta this morning, for a MyWay France tour. Our return date became available today, and wanted to use some miles for one of the (three) fares, before those limited seats/flights got snapped up. Knowing the mileage-award ticket would require a separate confirmation from the other two (paid) seats, called Customer Service rather than attempting to book online so the two reservations could be linked in the event of flight changes between now and the trip, and to arrange for seat selections next to each other. The prices were definitely higher than when we last purchased international flights (in 2021, for a 2022 trip), but not extreme as many outlets have reported. Maybe a ~10% uptick, 'slight' by recent ketchup-index standards. :)
