I had a problem last year in Prague where I brought a power converter with plug adapter, but the outlets were so deep into the wall that even with the plug adapter, the converter's size made it impossible to go deep enough to reach the plug in the wall. I now understand this is a general (not Prague specific) problem? Does anyone know of a solution?!
We asked the hotel if they had adaptors to loan us, and a few of them actually did. My kids were fighting over charger time so they could revitalize their Ipods!
As you have indicated, this happens all over mainland Europe (not UK). No one tells you about this ahead of time. This is solved by adding another plug adaptor (Europe plug) onto the plug adaptor. So, you have 2, two-rounded plug adaptors plus the convertor. Hope this makes sense.
We used this adapter for the Czech Republic:
And this one for many of the Western European countries:
I use an extension cord to solve this problem. Just be sure to buy one in Europe (I got mine at a supermarket). Maybe an extension cord from the U.S. would work but I'd be afraid to try it and maybe get fried. I find the extension cord doubly useful for moving a lamp to a better reading location. (Oh, and on that note I also buy a brighter light bulb once I've "over there" to switch out with dim reading lights provided - check out how the bulb is connected first at your local hotel. Just remember to unscrew/twist/plug-in/out whatever the bulb when you leave.)
Haha, JUST had the SAME problem in Prague. Denise is correct. Use one of your regular plug adaptors coupled with your converter and it will be fine. But depending on how heavy the plugs are, it may not stay in anyway. I had a heavy plug, but I was able to rubberband the plugs together so it stayed in...
Thanks for all the great advice everyone!
