December Mediterranian cruise?

My husband and I can get a great deal on a Viking Ocean Cruise. Has anyone been on a Mediterranian cruise in December? Were the waters choppy? Was it that cold? We want to do the northern part- Barcelona, Nice, Monico, Tuscany, Rome.

You need look at a map and see how far north most of Europe is including the Med. I would think that it could be very cool if not a bit cold and rainy. That is really the off season for cruises and that probably accounts for the great deal. I don't know if the waters would be any more choppy than an other time but it definitely will be cool with very short days. I personally would not do a cruise at that time.

I would happily do the cruise then. For one thing, the price is probably right, very right. The port calls at that time of year will likely have fewer tourists than in spring or summer. Nice and Monaco are popular destinations for a lot of people in winter, so it should not be too cold. As for the others? Go with the flow. Book the ship excursions and if the weather is unpleasant you will be nicely pampered. On really bad days, stay on board and have fun.

Thanks for the input! That's where my thoughts are at. Norma. Nice's average is 50 degrees F. We're aren't sun worshippers and don't mind 50's-70's. We're also off peak travellers, don't like high seasons.
You're right, Nice and Monaco are where people go for winter retreats. We want to stay in Valencia and Denia a week before the cruise also. They're in the 60's. I was more concerned with someone saying it may be choppy. There are many cruise lines that do have Dec Jan cruises north and south Mediteranian and many are booked up so I guess it shouldn't be that bad. We were on a Viking River Cruise last September, it was amazing! They're a trusted line. Thanks again for the input! Norma and Frank

Yeah, it may be choppy but have some Gravol on hand and stay midships if it gets really rough. I crossed the .Atlantic one year when there was a Force 9 gale that lasted 4 days. It was very exciting but you will have nothing like that to contend with in the Mediterranean. The Cruise Critic website may have info about December Med. cruises.

I don't know about ports in Spain and Italy, but the Nice/Monaco area can have a strong wind coming out of the Alps, about every third day. If you get there on a windy day, would the ship still dock? A lot of ports close. You can probably get the info on Cruise Critic.

The water will be cold. As for choppy, it depends on the weather. Cruise ships normally don't feel the seas unless it's really bad.

Before you book, check out vacationstogo.com. I've booked through them several times without a problem. They have a great search engine that will show options and prices. I checked it out quickly and the cheapest 7 day cruise, to Tenerife in December, was only $190; the most expensive they list are 14 day Viking cruises at $3,500 -$4000. There are plenty of MSC 11 and 12 night cruises for less than half that. I shop more for itinerary than line and I didn't really look at the itineraries to see if they are something I'd like.
