Day trips from Tuscany Villa near Lucca 13 days Mar 1-14

I have a large group staying at a 6 bedroom villa outside of Lucca. We are planning on renting a car to travel the small villages, and the Tuscan landscape. Many of our guests are first timer's to Europe and want to see the bigger cities in Italy. What is the best way of travel for a group of 5-6 going to Rome, Venice, Florence. for day trips? (Car, Train, Bus). After the 13 days a smaller group wants to spend a few days on the French Riviera. What is the best mode of transport to get there.

Florence is doable as a daytrip. Drive to Lucca and take the train from there. Pisa, although not on your list, is also an easy day trip. Rome is a bit of a stretch. It's about two hours from Florence by train. Venice would be impossible as a day trip.

Trains are your best bet to get to the major towns and also to the French Riviera. Cars are best for small towns but parking can be complicated in the larger towns.
