My daughter is sick with the flu and staying in a hostel in Amsterdam. I need to find a gracious B&B, or private home with really nice folks that will let her check today and rest for a couple days until she gets better. I need to also find a place to get her on some antibiodics. Any advise or recommendations.
Thanks
Worried Mom
Diana - Try this website - the official visitors bureau for Amsterdam. You could try to phone - they should be open in a couple of hours, and most of their staff speak English.
Calling now-thanks
Have her call the U.S. Consulate in Amsterdam. They can give her the name of english speaking doctors in the city.
In Europe, unlike in the U.S., it's common to go to the pharmacy first since so many drugs are available without prescription. Ask the consulate for pharmacies in her area where they speak English. (I'm guessing, most will.)
The hostel is also likely to know the pharmacies in the area and those where someone speaks English.
Have you daughter go to the pharmacy like Frank advised, she will tell them how she feels and they will give her medicine.
My experience with Dutch pharmacies is that they don't dispense medicines as "liberally" as their neighbor countries. Most everything needs a written prescription from a doctor. Though I'm sure they can recommend nearby physicians.
Holland is a strange place, they are tolerant about some things: sex, drugs.....but prescription drugs, and ticket scalping is strictly enforced:)
Thank you, thank you for all your comments-she was unable to find a pharmacist who would prescribe antibiotics without seeing a dr first- she left for Geneva a day early so she could see an on campus dr who prescribed antibiotics for strep throat-
I have been sick many times in western Europe and elsewhere the pharmacy has always solved it for me. Kindness is also found with fellow travelers or staff hopefully the hostel staff can help her settle somewhere to rest and recup.
take care worried Mom.
