I will be flying from LAX to Amsterdam and then to Rome all on KLM. I will have a 2 hour and 15 minute layover in Amsterdam. If I check in a bag at LAX, will I have to claim it when I go through Customs and Immigration in Amsterdam or will it just be transferred directly to my flight to Rome?
Providing your 2 flights are on one ticket, then your bags will go directly to your connecting flight. You only need to deal with Passport Control in Amsterdam.
If you are on one ticket, it will go all the way. If you are worried, watch the tag they put on your bag at LAX should have the Rome airport code on it.
YOU will have to go through passport control at AMS, but not your bag.
No, your bags are checked through, and you will not see them in Amsterdam, just verify when they tag the bag at LAX that it says Rome on the tag (likely FCO).
In Amsterdam, you will get off the plane and be in the international terminal. Follow the signs for connecting flights, it helps to know your gate, as there are different immigration kiosks for different gates (though technically any will work). Follow the signs, get through immigration, and on to your gate. 2 Hours 15 minutes is plenty of time, I typically get through in much less than an hour.
Different poster here. I just received my Boarding passes ATL - AMS - ZHR. Both boarding passes printed but there is a 3rd document attached. Connection Information Document. It states I must proceed directly to the gate or ticket counter of your connection Airline (KLM) to check in - although I already have a boarding pass. Also states that I must claim my checked bag and re-check. However earlier this week I received a informational email from DELTA that my bags would be check through. Any ideal what this is all about. Calling Delta is hopeless.
Still call Delta. May be a pain, but they are the ones with the answers as to why.
I fly Delta often, never heard of this. The only instance I can think of is if your layover is over something like 16 hours. You could easily avoid by not checking bags, but if you really need to check, you're going to have to call Delta. How long of a layover do you have?
Just spoke with Delta. Agent definitively said.......maybe. I have 1 3/4 hours for change at 6:30 in the AM, so time is not an issue. Delta agent said it can happen either way. Bag will be checked to ZRH but flight agent in AMS should advise whether to claim baggage or it will be forwarded. "May" have to claim and recheck as I am changing airlies.....although a Delta partner and a single ticket. Makes perfect sense - right?
Agent strongly encouraged checking for bag as she has seen baggage lost in this transfer. Again agent for arrival in AMS will supposedly have answers, likely announced before landing.
This "connection information document" does not appear with my boarding passes in the Delta APP. I only received it when I printed boarding passes (as is my habit) at the Delta Website.
Many trips to Europe, I always travel carry-on only, but going skiing, need more stuff. Always something new and convoluted.
When you check your bag for tge first flight, ask, then look at the tag they put on the bag. What ever airport that tag says is where your bag will go.
