Just a preview for anyone spending Christmas in Europe this year. Temperatures across most of the continent have plummeted in the past week. Snow has fallen just about everywhere and more is forecast throughout the week. If you planned an Alpine winter sports trip, welcome to paradise. If you will rely on a car for transport... welcome to hell.

Nice photos of the roads in Germany -

In the past 2 weeks we've had about 1000 accidents in Calgary alone due to the snowy roads. And I was hoping to leave this behind by flying off to Germany. Well, this time I'm really glad that we booked train rides even though the car would have come cheaper for us - unless we got into an accident ...
Here in Vienna we've got about an inch of snow on the ground so far. Everything is looking very Christmasy. Last night on the way home I was really struck by how pretty it is --Christmas lights, old buildings, and snow! Temps are hovering around freezing. Yesterday I noticed that the "old Danube" is starting to freeze over (not the river itself, but an offshoot that goes by that name). More snow flurries are forecast for the next few days. On my "to do" list today: have a mug of hot spiced wine at a nearby Christmas market. Merry Christmas to everyone!
It's all because of GLOBAL WARMING, don't you know.
Chani,
Careful, you're going to start a political thread.
Then again, anything to warm things up would be nice.
In a typical stroke of British luck it appears that unchecked global warming will probably move the gulf stream making the UK significantly colder. Everyone else gets warmer and we turn in Canada, typical! (Apart from the South-East that is, it turns into Atlantis.)
Hey, they're actually predicting snow down here for Christmas. If it does, between the presents and the snow, I think my kids' heads will explode.
Brad,
I can't help it. Over here everything is political :-)
And we are having lots of rain so far this winter. Maybe we will have a nice crop of spring wild flowers.
If you go to the France Today magazine website and page down and click on the 17.00 view, you can see snow falling in Paris.
It has been snowing all day in Frankfurt, more flurries than anything major, but still very pretty down at the Christmas Market.
Pavia had first snowfall yesterday and started up again today. Slippery for walking and not too bad for driving ... yet! Expected to snow tomorrow as well. It is winter in Italy after all. SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE! :)
Right now it's snowing like crazy outside!
The weather here in western Canada still isn't too severe (thankfully) yet. In the south interior we've had about 5cm of new snow so far, but it's mostly melted. The temp's have been hovering around +3C for the last few days, with some light rain.
Fortunately, the ski hills are getting lots of snow which will be good for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Not long to wait now!
If anyone wants to have a look at both sides of the weather here, check the Webcams at www.virtualvernon.com/webcam/index.php (quality is not good, but it provides an idea).
Starting to get lots of snow here now, about 4-5" maybe in Frankfurt. Flights are getting canceled left and right, Dusseldorf has canceled all flights. The train station was pretty full when I walked through there this afternoon.
Cars are sliding around nicely on the roads(glad I don't have to drive in this), but the Christmas Market looks fabulous. The snow is super dry, so it isn't melting into slush. Got some great photos and went to a handbell concert in the Alte Nikolai this evening. Beautiful!
It is beastly cold. We are going around London but doing more indoor things.
We were in Praha 12/15 through 12/22 - and it was COLD. Snow a few days which added great ambience to an already beautiful city. We took a trip to Dresden to visit the Christmas markets on 12/18 and thought our fingers would fall off! But it gave us a great excuse to stop into a local cafe and have a nice cappucino and a wionderful folienkartoffel!
We were prepared and had extra layers but nothing would stop that cold.
