I will be traveling to Croatia and Italy in a few days. Is it best to convert US dollars to Euros and Croatian kuna before I depart the US or after I arrive in Croatia and Italy? Or does it really matter?
Tom, you'll get the best exchange rate by using ATM's in the destination country. You'll have to check with your financial institution to determine how much they charge for service fees. Be sure to notify them that you'll be travelling overseas, so they don't "lock" your ATM card when they notice the change in location. I usually like to have €100 or so on hand, for travelling expenses until I can get settled and find the nearest ATM. Happy travels!
Ken is absolutely correct. You will may a high conversion price whether you change on this side or the other. Makes no difference, the money changers will get their substantial cut of your money.
