Cruise port-Gibraltar

On an upcoming cruise, we will be in Gibraltar for a day. The excursions offered by the cruise line are very pricey. Anyone know about touring Gibraltar on our own? Are there hop on/hop off buses? Is it easy to get around? I have looked all through Rick's site and can't find any information. I have Rick's Mediterranean Cruise Ports tour book but he doesn't cover Gibraltar.

John Lopez, a native of Gibraltar, can help you. He gives all sorts of private, semi-private and custom tours so you'll see everything and includes both an 8 seat passenger van and/or a cruise/van. You won't miss a thing and he and his drivers were all born and raised there and know their stuff. You'll get the inside scoop at a much more reasonable rate than cruise lines which takes big groups clunking around in an impersonal way. Here is John's site> www.gibraltar-rock-tours.com He is so personable and friendly, everyone enjoys his tours.

We will be in Gibraltar on April 19, on the Celebrity Constellation. If that's your ship too, perhaps we can arrange to share John's van?

Thank you, Terri Lynn for the referral. I will contact Gibraltar-Rock tours.
Charlene, we are on Princess and arrive in May. Happy cruising.

I'd suggest taking the taxi tour. They're very organized. I'd expect to see some within a short walk of the terminal.

We arrived by car, parked in La Linea, Spain, and walked in. Our plan was to take the cable car to the top of the rock, then walk down seeing the gun emplacements/caves on the way down. Just before we got to the front of the line for the cable car, the wind got too high and they shut it down. We asked another couple in line if they wanted to share a cab tour (our backup plan if the cable car was closed for wind) and went outside looking for a cab.

We didn't have to wait, several taxi vans were already in the parking lot and a manager was filling them up with people leaving the cable car building (so we were automatically put into groups). I'd expect it to look a lot like that when you get off your ship. The price was something under $30 each (I think 28 or 29) and worth it. The vans don't go as high on the rock as the cable cars but they do take you everywhere and it includes your driver as tour guide. We had a very nice encounter with Gibraltar's Barbary apes that we wouldn't have had without the taxi tour, overall likely a better experience than just walking on our own.
