Crossing Italian Swiss boarders in a rental car

Hello all,

We are flying into Zurich and going to Appenzell for 2 nights and then to Alta Badia in the Dolomites Italy to do a Hut to Hut hike. That hike ends in Cortina, Italy. We then wanted to take 2 days to go to Lauterbrunnen where we are staying in Murren for 5 nights.. Train travel from Appenzell to Alta Badia is difficult as is the train from Cortina to Lauterbrunnen. So we are thinking of renting a car rather than rely on train travel. Is it difficult to cross the boarders from Switzerland to Italy and then back to Switzerland from Italy in a rental car?

Also we are spending 5 nights in Murren at the tail end of the trip so wanted to park the car in Lauterbrunnen. Does anyone know if there are places we can park it for 5 days in Lauterbrunnen before returning it to the Zurich airport?

Also, does anyone have any suggestions for cool towns to stay in between Cortina and Lauterbrunnen?

Thank you so much for your input and suggestions! I am so appreciative!

In Lauterbrunnen is the Parking Bahnhof which is a many story above and below ground parking structure. Website is https://www.jungfrau.ch/shop/en/parkticket.

As the name would indicate it is run by the same folks who run the train to the top of the Jungfraujoch, and it is behind the station. Not exactly cheap, and if you but in advance and miss it you lose it - it is for a specific time and date for a fixed duration. You can also take a ticket on arrival and pay on foot when leaving. No in and out. And as I say, not cheap.

There is an open air lot down by the church in Lauterbrunnen which is a little cheaper, but has not got the security of the parkhaus and is of course open to the air. Most important, I am not convinced that it is available for multi day tickets.

There is an open air lot near the Schilthorn gondola at the end of the valley in Steckelberg. A little cheaper but then you need the Postbus to get back down the valley. It does support long stay, and is where many of the hang glider guys park (and land, carefully we hope).

You won't find free street parking (that's generally true in much of Switzerland).

You might want go on Google Maps and chart out for Point A to Point B. The Dolomites are north of Venice--and southeast of Innsbruck. It's not easy to get back to Switzerland from Cortina as The Alps are in between. See how Google Maps routes you by train and by car.

Backtracking is sometimes difficult--and expensive given the prices of rental cars are up and so are fuel prices.

Austin, its been many years. But I went over to Italy from Austria and up to Switzerland. No problems crossing.

I can't remember the route any more. But one of yours might involve tunnels. Sometimes they used to close for repairs. Just something to check out.

Have fun!

Crossing European borders by car seldom requires you to even stop, and I have never had my car documents checked. However, you should check that the rental car insurance allows you to take the car outside the country where it originates. Cheap car hire may have more restrictions.

We had no problem at all going to Italy to Switzerland to Italy. We had to get Swiss sticker for car window but your car would presumably come with one.
