Crossing into Schengen zone by bus or train (Croatia to Italy via Slovenia)

Hello all,

I’m traveling from Rijeka to Trieste, either by Flixbus or, if I can get the ticketing site to work, by train from Rijeka to Pivka (Slovenia) and then on a different ticket from Pivka to Trieste. Other than flying, I haven’t crossed in/out of the Schengen zone in a while and never on a bus. I assume the passport check comes at the border? Do they look at your bags or just ask questions? As transit hiccups have been the major headache of what has otherwise been a lovely trip, I’d just like to know more or less what to expect.

Thanks!
Caroline

All three countries are EU members, so there shouldn't be any customs at the borders. Italy and Slovenia are Schengen members, but Croatia is not, so at the Croatia/Slovenia border they should check your passport and digitally note your entrance into the Schengen zone to start the 90/180 day period. As long as you are not on anyone's no-no list all of this should be a formality.

I haven't done that border - but its not uncommon for the driver to gather up all passports and you stay on the bus. You maybe singled out as a non-European passport - or not. Its all a lot easier than flying
