Hi needing feedback planning 5 days in Crete in July and also going to Croatia 4-5 days
Thoughts on itinerary’s and hiring a car in Crete we are flying in to Heraklion and ferry to Santorini
Then flying Athens to crostia

We found the best way to explore the Greek Islands was to take a cruise. Consider a cruise from Venice that includes Split and Dubrovnik and then Crete, Santorini, Mykonos and Athens.
If you are still focused on doing 5 days in Crete, renting a car would be the obvious call. Ferries can be a bit expensive, compare to flights. Consider doing Croatia on a separate trip. Stick to Greece, enjoy Crete, the smaller islands and Athens.

Hiring a car is the best way to get around on Crete. I would sleep in in Chania and take day trips from there. I would also watch the movie Zorba the Great which was filmed in Chania before going.
If you’re arriving in Heraklion, visit Knossos first and it’s museum. I believe it’s open from 8a to 8p.
I would pick up a Lonely Planet guidebook on Crete too. This way you won’t miss it’s top sights.
Top sights in Croatia are Dubrovnik and Plitvice Lakes National Park.

As you're planning to rent a car in Greece and assuming you don't have an E.U. driver's license, be sure that each driver listed on the rental form has the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. These can easily be obtained at any AAA / CAA office for a small fee.
