As issues surrounding boosters are evolving rapidly , European destinations are responding to visitors status . Two recent articles are helpful updates -https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/21/health/covid-vaccine-antibodies-t-cells.html and https://news.yahoo.com/fda-considering-second-covid-19-023257389.html These articles may appear to contradict one another, but taken in context , the information should be helpful in planning a trip
Steven….can you post the NYT article….they told me I exceeded my limit for free articles….
As far as the FDA ‘ studying an additional booster’…… they don’t seem to be taking into account there were many early adopters of the current booster and those will most likely expire June or July…..
Also….the EU has not imposed an expiration on the current booster shot…..but some countries are.
Chris , As far as I'm aware , I don't think the rules on this site allow me to reprint the Times piece , but it may link to another source , I'll try to find that . The second booster that the FDA is looking at , at this point may be authorized for people with immune supressed conditions and people of advanced age , and/or underlying health conditions , As things in some countries ( Switzerland , as one example ) are already changing things like pre entry testing requirements , an alteration of the 270 or 180 days rules may not be far in the future . I am in a position that my booster will be invalid by current rules ( had it in mid October 2021 , going over August 2022 ) . Under these circumstances , I'm not too concerned . By the time I go , Either the rules will have changed , or I will get a fourth dose come spring , or they will abandon the time frame rule boosters by then ( all of these , likely scenarios . )
Chris , I just looked back at the Switzerland thread , and your interchange with Carrie . I'm headed there as well , and I think you are overly concerned . Things are looking better as time passes , the two articles in my OP are prospective indicators . Don't worry !
Steven….a 4th shot is still not recommended and there is discussion that multiple vaccines could hurt one’s immune system. It does not seem that things will be coming soon….more likely the fall.
Life is full of various levels of uncertainty , I can't be any more reassuring . As far as the availability of a fourth dose , NYState dept of health is indicating that they are available for certain segments of the population . As I am in a situation that makes me eligible ( 75 years , and a cardiac condition ) I'll get a fourth dose come late spring or early summer , but based on what I'm reading , the 270/180 requirements are likely to be a non - issue in the next few months. Past that , my crystal ball gets foggy . FWIW , here is the NYState dept of Health position on the fourth dose -https://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/home
I received my initial two doses of Pfizer early last year. However, I have waited to get the booster so that I can take two overseas trips this year.
I won't take any more boosters unless I have to do so to travel.
I read that Israel has done away with its vaccine requirements altogether. Hope this is the future. I am not taking boosters every year.
I got 2 Moderna doses in January and February 2021, booster in October 2021.
Thinking of sneaking in another Moderna before my May trip just to be safe hehe.
I, too, will be beyond the 270 day window during my travels this summer. I am 68 years old, with no qualifying illnesses to allow me to get a second booster in the US. My Booster was in October of 2021. I will try to get a second booster in a pharmacy here in the US before I leave for Europe on June 10. I am less worried about requirements (they already seem to be much less restrictive) and more concerned about picking up and/or transmitting Covid while traveling. I will also be wearing a good mask and dining outside as often as I can. I know that all Rick Steves Tours will require that tour members wear masks on board. If that were not the case, I would cancel. Between Covid and the Russian attack of Ukraine, it is a crazy time to travel. However, I am a day older today than I was yesterday. I will be taking fully vaccinated and boosted grandkids with me on three Rick Steves tours this year. I hope to do this again in 2023, and in subsequent years, as the grandkids become old enough to fully benefit from traveling with me. I really cannot afford to wait until the "right" time. It is now or never.
We pivoted Monday from going to Switzerland due to their 270 day rule which they applied to our October booster. We are now going to England after debating pros and cons of an additional booster. We also consulted with our doctor and our pharmacist and their view was they would not do another vaccine right now if it were them. We decided to forego the 2nd booster and change countries.
We are not immuno-compromised but are 66 & 70.
As things progress, here is an update on the development of a fourth Covid shot - https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/medical/pfizer-planning-to-submit-data-on-4th-covid-shot-soon-while-working-on-vaccine-for-all-variants/ar-AAUWABe?ocid=BingNewsSearch
