I still use my pack purchased some 15 years or so ago. Maybe longer. I recall buying a rain cover for it, but don't see the pack or a cover in the store. Was there one? An alternative?

Check out REI for a back pack rain cover. That is where I got mine.

I bought a Deuter rain cover from a local store. REI showed me a full cover one that was more than $40.The Deuter does not cover your back but has a cinching drawstring & provides good coverage. There are three sizes. Here's a link to one:

BTW there are different sizes to backpack covers, so know the size of your pack when you look at the REI site or take your pack with you into the store. Pam

I don't think I paid more than $40 for my pack! :-) It's 20 years old. I may pass by REI on Friday as I head for the airport. In the meantime, I'll keep looking.

Line the bag with a garbage bag that fits. Saves money and takes up no space to speak of

Garbage bag would work for showers and for emergencies, but if you're planning the cover is so much better. It not only deals with the main part of the pack, but with any pockets. And, you don't have to worry if the garbage gets torn. ; )
