For the last several years, my husband and I have been purchasing travel insurance for medical (and had to use it once). We will be traveling to England in June and plan to purchase it again. So, we will want the medical coverage but I'm also thinking of trip cancellation. The only thing that we would have a problem with in this regard would be our flight. My mother (being 90 years old and with a few problems) could cause us to have to push our trip out. I'm not sure what experiences people have had with this (through United Airlines). Do I need travel insurance to push our flight out from June to perhaps September if something happens here? We are flying on two mileage tickets. Thanks.
That gets tricky. Not all trip cancellation policies would cover a third person problem. A better question is what would United charge you to make that change. I know you can change the tickets but at what cost? Remember, with insurance (and assuming it is a covered event) all you can recover is your actual losses. You cannot make money on the insurance policy. And it is all explained in the fine print which needs to be read carefully several times.
Thanks, Frank. I appreciate your input on this. I had gone onto Insuremytrip to see what was listed there. I will contact United and ask them too.
To underline what Frank said: I'm pretty sure that insurance won't pay you anything for mileage tickets. On the other hand, in the event of a need to cancel, you most likely can redeposit the miles or change your dates (for a fee, of course).
