Could use some help booking air for Honolulu to Yerevan, Armenia

My daughter (grad student) is flying to a conference in Yerevan from Honolulu. Dates are 7/3 to 7/11. Looking at Skyscanner, a decent option would be Honolulu to Seattle to Frankfort to Yerevan on Alaskan and Condor. Then, when I look to book direct, the same flights cost more on Alaskan. Then, if I try to book thru Condor, Honolulu is a departure city, but they don't go to Yerevan, BUT, THEY DO! In terms of flight time, the Alaskan, Condor flight is the best even though it arrives at about 2am. Though, it seems most/all flights to Yerevan arrive during the very early morning.

I don't think she should fly any airline that connects in the Middle East, so that cuts out Quatar.

Use Google flight search so you can filter out the airports you don't want a layover. A very quick search resulted in a HNL -> LAX -> Vienna -> Yerevan and the same on return except via Frankfurt (with very long layovers though). $1600 booked through United.

I think this is the search result: https://www.google.com/travel/flights/s/ByijYBq4gaJcHmpf7

@CL, thanks for looking. I think Skyscanner and Google flights do the same thing? That particular flight has a much longer travel time than the Alaskan/Condor flights, and actually when I go to book on United, her destination does not come up. I think it is in her best interest to have completely connected tickets.

Have you looked at Turkish Air?

For your dates I see a HNL-SEA-IST-EVN for ~$2150 r/t. This is a single booking with the airline.

Other connecting cities, e.g., LAX and SFO cost more.

The google flight using UAL < I am unable to replicate the fare on the UAL site. ( at the $1600 price)

Good luck

@Joe, Thanks! I'm seeing good options on their website and it looks like their economy tickets are completely refundable which would be great for her.

Then, if I try to book thru Condor, Honolulu is a departure city, but they don't go to Yerevan.

I just clicked on the Condor website and plugged the HNL as departure and EVN as destination and it shows me options. They include a 7hr layover in Frankfurt and 2am arrival. The destination name shows as "Yerevan / Eriwan".

I can also see options on Turkish airlines with shorter layover in Instanbul.

@Joy, it doesn't come up for me with a departure city of Honolulu. It does come up if I put Frankfurt as the departure city. . . So basically, its not allowing me to purchase a connected ticket. Are you using https://www.condor.com/en-us/flights ?

@Joe, Ugg, the inexpensive airfares on Turkish have really long flight times.

@Joy, crazy! I switched from Firefox to Chrome and Yerevan does come up there.

Jules, look for the flights on Google Flights. After selecting the flights, Under "Booking Options", select "Book with Condor". This will take you directly to the Condor website with your flights already selected.

Thanks, Jeanm.
@Joy, the United website does the same thing. Yerevan won't come up on Firefox but it does on Chrome. Really Odd

That is odd, jules m! Chrome is my default but I go to Edge if something is not working properly. Glad you can see those options now.
And if she travels, make sure she books the hotel starting night before so she can go straight to hotel with the 2am arrival.

Yes, Turkish has very long flight times since the distance covered is obviously greater when compared with a flight to a Western European airport (FRA, VIE, MUC, etc).

Turkish generally has much nicer food, free checked bags, and potentially free tour, free transit hotel, or free stopover in IST (2 free nights hotel if on an economy ticket). Caveat: all options come with strict rules so please investigate if you are planning on using one of these

I flew through Doha last Friday on my way to Mozambique and it was easy and business as usual - just depends on individual risk tolerance

We have flights on American Airlines & Qatar Air from JAX, Florida to Yerevan returning from Georgia in August/Sep.
Their prices were fantastic.

I think Skyscanner and Google flights do the same thing?

They are both search engines, but draw data from different sources. I hope you find a flight that suits your criteria, would definitely recommend a refundable option given the situation with her passport.

First. I think Turkish Air flies out of Seattle and that woukd be my first choice. Istanbul is not the Middle Eaat if that's a concern.

But, as biased as I am, maybe get to Philidelphia, then take the direct flight to Budapest. Then a few days later after enjoying Budapest fly Wizzair direct to Yerevan for about $90.

Thanks everyone for the help! It seems our major problem was Firefox. For some reason, Yerevan was not coming up in most of the airline search engines. I really was excited when I looked at Turkish, but itineraries with shorter duration were expensive, and its a academic institution paying for the flight. We felt she needed a refundable fair, and Condor sure didn't have that. I believe after she has a discussion with her advisor, she'll book Lufthansa where she can get a refundable ticket for $250 more, plus, they had good flights with shorter trip duration times. The flight from Honolulu is on United and then Lufthansa picks up. I wouldn't say that United and Lufthansa would be my first choice of airlines, but they'll get her there.

@Going, I'll give that a look when I have more time. Thank you

@Mr. E, very appealing if she had the extra time!

I did learn a lot about Skyscanner and Google flights. I do look at them occasionally, but being from a Delta dominated airport and that I have status with Delta, I rarely consider other airlines, usually when I deem flights to be high or have inconvenient itineraries.

I noticed quite a few odd situations on both Skyscanner and Google flights. First, we were getting options that we couldn't get when we tried to book directly. She would have liked to book Alaskan/Condor that she found on Skyscanner and booking.com. But when we looked on the Alaskan website, all the flights were codeshares with Qatar. She wasn't interested in connecting in Doha. Then when we looked at the Condor site, the terms weren't favorable.

Whether its hotels, tours, or airline tickets, I always try to book directly with the organization providing the service. I rarely use booking.com for hotels, and I don't know that I'll ever use Expedia, Booking etc. for airline tickets. But, they had options by combining different airlines' flights that were convenient and thus tempting. However, I would guess those tickets are not connected, and who's responsible when things go bad? I've never thought about it before.

I thank all who have helped my daughter with the flights and the passport issue. She is a pretty bright young woman finding herself in "new and unfamiliar territory". She is a theoretical mathematician (when she finishes) and has overcome a lot. We are incredibly proud of her.
