Thanks everyone for the help! It seems our major problem was Firefox. For some reason, Yerevan was not coming up in most of the airline search engines. I really was excited when I looked at Turkish, but itineraries with shorter duration were expensive, and its a academic institution paying for the flight. We felt she needed a refundable fair, and Condor sure didn't have that. I believe after she has a discussion with her advisor, she'll book Lufthansa where she can get a refundable ticket for $250 more, plus, they had good flights with shorter trip duration times. The flight from Honolulu is on United and then Lufthansa picks up. I wouldn't say that United and Lufthansa would be my first choice of airlines, but they'll get her there.
@Going, I'll give that a look when I have more time. Thank you
@Mr. E, very appealing if she had the extra time!
I did learn a lot about Skyscanner and Google flights. I do look at them occasionally, but being from a Delta dominated airport and that I have status with Delta, I rarely consider other airlines, usually when I deem flights to be high or have inconvenient itineraries.
I noticed quite a few odd situations on both Skyscanner and Google flights. First, we were getting options that we couldn't get when we tried to book directly. She would have liked to book Alaskan/Condor that she found on Skyscanner and booking.com. But when we looked on the Alaskan website, all the flights were codeshares with Qatar. She wasn't interested in connecting in Doha. Then when we looked at the Condor site, the terms weren't favorable.
Whether its hotels, tours, or airline tickets, I always try to book directly with the organization providing the service. I rarely use booking.com for hotels, and I don't know that I'll ever use Expedia, Booking etc. for airline tickets. But, they had options by combining different airlines' flights that were convenient and thus tempting. However, I would guess those tickets are not connected, and who's responsible when things go bad? I've never thought about it before.
I thank all who have helped my daughter with the flights and the passport issue. She is a pretty bright young woman finding herself in "new and unfamiliar territory". She is a theoretical mathematician (when she finishes) and has overcome a lot. We are incredibly proud of her.
