Costco Citicard "Trip Cancellation & Interruption Protection"

I'm about to buy insurance for our upcoming three-week Europe trip.

I saw insuremytrip.com recommended, and through them I could cover my family of 4 for $176 on the "Travelex Travel Select" plan. Anyone had experience with that? It seems very reasonably priced - makes me wonder how solid it is...

...but I can get it even lower if I just get a medical only insurance plan and rely on my Costco Citi card for any trip cancelation/interruption. Wondering if anyone has had experience of using that benefit. Is it solid, or should I pay for trip insurance?

Thanks,

Paul

What are the policy limits on your Citi card? We've relied on our platinum card's (different CC company) travel insurance for smaller trips in the past. But our card only covers items that were purchased with that card, and the limits aren't that high. Check for exclusions, as well.

Because we usually travel more than once a year, we now have an annual policy.

The Citi/Costco/Visa credit card includes significant trip cancellation and interruption benefits up to $3,000 per person or the lesser of card purchases for the trip at no additional cost. Full details are described in Your Guide to Protection Benefits, revised on July 29, 2018. The guide is found after you login to your account. Read it carefully. Anyone with actual use of these benefits? Not me to date. Also, the credit card has no foreign transaction fee and rebates 3% of "eligible" travel, including restaurant, purchases around the world.

You can't really make these decisions based on Internet chatter. You have to buckle down and read the fine print, which is different for each provider, and for each of their tiers of products. For example, what is your parents' health like? What have you been to the doctor for in the last year, or three years? How much of your trip is prepaid, and how much is cancellable? Does the product require paying the premium for "... entire cost of the trip" in order to get full coverage (like Travelex), rather than calculating some self-chosen, skimpy number to reduce your premium? Did you already pay the airline for ticket insurance? Did they let you see the policy?

On the plus side, I learned that Travelex was much more interested in the health of the travelers than of the parents NOT going on the trip. But it's hard to believe you can get away with $176 for four people, even with two kids (?) under 17.
