convertible carry-on, flimsy or not?

Is this on sale RS convertible carry-on structured enough to carry a laptop, books, and papers overseas? It would be used only as a carry on. We used the $29 Campmor carry on for this purpose until a cat clawed it to death.

I have looked at the RS bag you are talking about and have the Campmor bag you mentioned. They are similar in structure. You would want to put you electonics and books in something else and then pack them inside the bag. Well, books would be okay, but the computer would need some protection around it.

Books? I don't take one book with me, let alone book s. Anything from a guide book I might want, I would save on my computer. However, I now get all of my information from the internet, so I can save anything needed electronically. I do have my computer and papers - usually a few things off my computer, like my itinerary, that I print so I don't have to turn the computer on. Those go in a small computer case (my purse). My carry-on bag (Campmor) is for my clothes. If the Campmor bag had been the holder for your books, computer, etc, a convertible carry-on should work just as well. I also have a Rick Steves Convertible carry-on bag (retired) and the heavier weight of the material makes it a bit sturdier, albeit heavier. It's a little larger than the OPEC bag, so you'll have some extra room. However, if the Campmor bag has been more than big enough, you might want to try the Goodhope bag. It's somewhat smaller than the RS Convertible and Campmor bag, but similar in design - has hideaway straps and opens fully.
