I was surprised at the cost of a converter - crazy! Does anyone know if it is possible to buy a curling iron in amsterdam cheaply? I am thinking this is the better way to go....

You could try eBay or Amazon (I know there are German eBay and Amazon sites; not sure about Holland), and have it shipped to your hotel or, if staying with a relative, their home.
I did this recently too because I wanted a large barrel curling iron and could find one only at a department store for 70 Euros (ridiculous). So, before my next trip I bought one off Amazon.de for under 20 Euros and had it shipped to my cousin.
