Susan,
I took a pair of hiking boots and a pair of Mary Jane Keen's for the evenings. They are casual and very comfortable for walking the streets. I also would take a nice pair of sandals that are comfortable to wear with shorts or dresses.

Noot has some sandals that are so comfy I would wear them anytime anywhere .

I don't think anyone can really help you with this, you will have to slog through endless shoe stores and just keep trying things on. Avoid fashion shoes that are totally flat and have no padding or arches, they seem comfy in the store but walk a mile or two on cobble stones and see how that feels!
Well known and comfy brands( just a tiny list)

Keens,
Naots,
Dansko,
Clarks,
Tevas,
Josepf Seibel, and

Mephistos

Good luck , there are about another 10 brands I am sure I left off the list.

Eccos always work for me. I have three pair for work and just bought a pair of Cloud Maryjanes for tomorrow's departure to Europe! I've also had good luck with Clarks.

I discovered Finn Comforts last year. They saved my feet last year on a Berlin, Prague and Vienna tour. They are expensive, but my feet are worth it. ; )

Hi Susan,

... San Antonio Shoes (SAS) does not sell online, but you may talk with them about your needs by phone. (Open above link). It would likely be well worth your while. Their shoes are immediately ready to wear and great for walking; no break in needed - and all SAS shoes are really good-looking. You may want to see a catalog, so ask. Hope your adventure is wonderful! P

Merrell's Chameleon line has a bunch of different colors and styles but all are very similar in the fact that they are rugged with a vibram sole which is very comfortable to walk on, and are incredibly light and breathable.

They fit like a glove and really do wear so light on the foot that they are incredibly comfortable. Since you are going to do lots of walking/hiking I would look for something with a good sole on the shoe, and the Chameleons can easily double as a fantastic city walking shoe and a hiking shoe for the Alps.

My girlfriend loved the The ballerinas from Keen. They are a great option for quick slip ons that are comfortable, and a little bit more stylish.

My favorite are the Solomon hiking boots. My husband has above ankle and I have below ankle. Both are light and very comfortable. So comfortable, I use them as my day shoes, not just for hiking. I have seen them on herrington.com.

Try zappos.com (fast and free shipping) and get pretty much any Dansko style. I love the "sadie" with the sling back - very light weight and foot-friendly.

Just returned from 2 weeks of walking in Europe. I was very happy with Privos (Acacia Style) see Zappos.com or Shoebuy.com. Although you said you didn't want to take tennis shoes, I can see why, since you will already have bulky boots, I do want to recommend to other readers the Keen Wasatch tennis shoes. They are not the most fashionable, but they were so comfortable. I had not planned to wear them every day, but I wore them most days because I never once had sore feet, even after 10-12 hours a day in them. I bought them on one of the above mentioned sites. Free shipping to your home and if you need to return for any reason.

I have issues with both my knees and feet so went to a very good local shoe store for advice. They highly recommended Ecco sandals called Yucatan. I ordered them online for $120. I spent 10 days in Italy walking 10 hours a day. It was hot, it rained, we hiked trails in southern Italy and walked on the beach. My feet never bothered me once. You can adjust all the straps so I didn't get any blisters at all. I was traveling with my niece, she had a pair of Keen sandals that were similar but a different material. They got a terrible smell to them after the first week. Hope that helps!
