We are going to be doing a lot of walking in Europe. One concern I thought of is chafing on the inside of our legs. I know this might be silly but can't this happen to anyone no matter your size? Also, does anyone have any suggestions on what to wear that helps prevent chafing?
Compression shorts work for me.
Try using antiperspirant in the areas you're concerned about. I had a cross-country coach in college that advised me about using antiperspirant as a way to prevent blisters. I don't have the chafing problem but I can see it happening. I wear Underarmor boxer briefs (6" or 9" inseam), they may help because the legs won't ride up and create problems.
After the chafing happens, there is a great solution: Gold Bond Medicated Powder. We can't get it here, but when folk I know are coming over I ask them to bring a little as ballast. I wind up with the powder, they have a gap in the luggage for souvenirs!!
Gold Bond Medicated Powder comes in a travel size. I have one in my pile of travel size things. Since I rarely use it, the travel size is probably enough to last last ten years or more.
X2 for body glide it comes in an applicator that is like antiperspirant stick and there is an extra small size for travel also Under Armor makes very thin lycra exercise shorts.
A great solution for it is petroleum jelly cream. But, if you are looking to avoid it altogether, I would recommend ExOfficio boxer briefs or a boxer brief made of merino wool (I would recommend either Smartwool or Icebreaker for that). You can even try compression shorts as others have suggested. Of course, these can't absolutely guarantee it won't happen, but it would be very unlikely. Enjoy your travels!
If you wear the same jeans or pants that you wear every day in the US, then you shouldn't have problems with chafing. If you were going to run in a marathon, then yeah, it might be a problem, but not just walking around a city, even if it is for hours and hours every day. Are you wearing new, different clothing during your trip? With different kinds of seams? Otherwise, not sure why you feel this will be a problem. Have others experienced this?
"...If you wear the same jeans or pants that you wear every day in the US, then you shouldn't have problems with chafing..." Not true, I wear the same pants, and I always chaf. I think it might have to do with the legs swelling up a bit, and sweat irritating the skin.
i'd suggest you start walking for extended periods of time before you leave home so that your body can adjust. we were walking ~4 miles a day when we went to rome. even then, we were worn out. you don't realize how much you'll be walking when you are on your feet for literally 12 hours a day. i didn't have any chafing, but my one of my pinkie toes developed a blister.
"I know this might be silly..." Not. Silly. At. All. - Bad. Day. At. Vatican City. August. 1998. - Spent. Rest. Of. Day. And. Next. 48 Hours. Walking. Like. This. - Little. Mincing. Painful. Steps. Ouch. BodyGlide, long underpants (of one kind or another), and powder for afterwards sound good to me. Prevention...

Well, there ya go! I learn something new every day. Looks like lots of good advice from those who have experienced it.
Monistat makes an anti-chafing product (Soothing Relief Chafing Relief Powder Gel) that is more comfortable than Body Glide. It comes in a 3-1-1 travel friendly tube and a little goes a long way. Don't let the brand name deter you; this works quite well, and it's under $10.00. And as an added bonus for ladies that wear primer under their foundation, this product makes an excellent and more economical primer.
