Clothing for trip to Europe--Lauterbrunnen biggest concern

We are planning a trip to Europe (London, Paris, Italy, Switerland in that order) we will be in Switzerland the first week in June elsewhere mid to end of May. We plan on going up to schilthorn for breakfast:), up to Murren and Wengendo a bit of hiking to the falls in the areawe will be there for three days and then one afternoon in Bern. My question is about clothing and temperaturewe are trying to go with one back pack and a carry on bag for the entire three weeks which means things have to be lightweight and not bulky I have no idea what kind of clothing I will need for this area I have a fleece pullover shirtand a packable down vest.. just wondering if I should have a sweater(although bulky) and/or a jacket and if so how heavy.. I tend to be feel the cold easily.
Also, shoes, I have some keen hiking sandals which are amazingly comfortable and had planned to wear them most of the time but not sure if they will be ok even with socks for Switzerland... I don't want to bring heavy shoes again, weight and bulk... any suggestions would be appreciated

When we go to that area for hiking I take at least one long-sleeve base layer shirt (Patagonia), a micro fleece layer, and a waterproof/breathable lightweight jacket ( like Goretex or similar). If it is a cold day I layer all three. I take my hiking boots, but others in our family group do fine with their running shoes or cross-trainers. I would not wear Keen sandals for hiking in Switzerland, even with socks. The trails can be wet and muddy, and may pass through pastures with cows and their "residue".

Thanks good advice..thinking to pack the fleece shirt, with a wickable under shirt and down vest with waterproof lightweight outer jacket.. will look in to "walking" shoes saw some from mephisto that looked sort of like a sneaker.. but not so heavy. Hopefully that will all do..
Thanks

We were in Switzerland in early June last year and the weather was fairly mild. A light weight turtleneck, lw fleece jacket, and a scarf was perfect. Our trip up to the Schilthorn was a bit disappointing-view shrouded in clouds. Have you been up to the Jungfrau? It was more interesting IMO. There are lots of wonderful hiking trails. My favorite shoes for hiking are New Balance Country Walkers. Your trip sounds fabulous-enjoy!

We stayed in Lauterbrunnen in the first few days in June 2007. Weather was great and about 65 degrees. We stayed at the Hotel Silberhorn which is about 500' from the train station. Great breakfast and a nice restaurant for dinner. For the Schilthorn, Murren would be a great place to stay. The cable way to the Schilthorn is right there. The snow was completely gone from Murren at 5,200' for our visit. It was colder on our visits to the mountain tops (as you would expect) so we had sweaters and jackets (and hats for the Jungfrau) which we needed when outside. But, no guarantees on the weather.

"But no guarantees on the weather". So true. We have been there in June, July, and August and each time have had cold rainy days, warm sunny days, and sometimes both rain and sun in the same day.

Schilthorn is as far up as we will go and then just for the restaurant I think... we have not done much planning for this part of the trip just to know that we wanted to go up to Schilthorn one AM do breakfast...we know we want to go to Murren and and Wengen and hike to Trummelbach and Staubbach falls beyond that I think would be too much for three days they say hiking down from Schilthorn is very difficult so most likely will do easier hikes but have not explored that yet...
It seems from what everyone is saying layers is the way to go and I think we will be covered.. I just purchased a pair of Mephisto (sneaker like) walking shoes which should work.. since the Keens may be no good there.

BTW susan the NB country walkers look great but really look like a hiking shoe --I have a pair like that but wanted to bring only two pair that could do more double duty... if I don't like the Mephisto however when I get them I might try the NB...

Barbara. The key, as suggested by Lola, is layering. We, too, have been there in late May and early June, and other times. It really is critical to have some wind and cold protection as go up in altitude. I agree that it can be sunny or rainy or foggy or cloudy, sometimes all within a few hours. It could be cool or warm or even hot, but I can guarantee as you reach the mountain top it will be cold even in bright sun. Remember your sunglasses and sunscreen. In Trummelbach Falls take wind and water protection. Have a great time!
