Clothing and weather for 21 day trip in Europe starting september - October 2026

We are part of the 21 day tour in Europe during the end of September 2026 through middle of October. I wanted information about the temperatures expected with tour beginning in Amsterdam, then Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France. What types of clothing will work best during that time with those temps? Thank you!

What types of clothing will work best during that time with those temps?

The standard answer is always "layers". You'll also start running into cooler and often wetter weather across those regions, so a nice waterproof jacket makes a lot of sense - and can double if breezy plus be used as the top of your layering system.

You can google the weather for any place you might be going, but know it will be variable, so the layering is where you can adapt to any daily temperature changes. And, considering Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France is a pretty large chunk of land with a ton of variety, you may want to refine your question a bit for better answers.

To get an idea of what the weather might be like, you can check the average high/low temps and rainfall for the rough dates in each place you are visiting. For example, that tour ends in Paris, right? Googling "Paris weather mid-October" yields a result of highs mid50s to low60s, rain common. OTOH, early October in Florence and Rome could bring highs in the 70s. You can check closer to your travel dates to confirm.

I'm taking this tour a couple of weeks after you and definitely packing layers. On the page for the 21-day tour on the RS site, they list the average high and low temperatures for each destination.

I'm planning for anywhere from 40 to 75 degrees or so, which for me will be a few different pants options in different weights, merino short sleeve shirts, a few different tops to layer (a merino sweater, a fleece, a long sleeve sun shirt, etc), a packable puffy jacket, a rain jacket, and baselayers for cold. I'm also bringing light gloves and a light hat.

It is definitely a challenge to pack for that time of year and all of those locations, but I think with layers, a puffy jacket, and a rain jacket, we'll be prepared!

I recommend to look into the climate tables with day high and low averages (not peaks) from the last 30 years from the same tool (just next tab) because in Germany seldomly the weather of one day or week from a year is similar to the one from the next year at same date.

https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/germany/berlin/climate

An example is July 2025. A sentence from Germany's monthly weather summary: "Compared to the more recent and wetter reference period from 1991 to 2020 (87 l/m²), the average in Germany was exceeded by more than 30%. ... For Berlin: The amount of precipitation was 145 l/m². That was more than two and a half times what one would normally expect in the second month of summer (54 l/m²)." (source). Annual average precipitation is 576 l/m².

Weather forecasts in Germany and other countries mentioned countries of your list are reliable / likely 3-5 days in advance, in the Alps and at coasts often less.
