Heading to London and Paris in June. Looking at temperatures it looks like I should take a pair of closed- toed shoes and my Merrill sandels. I was planning on wearing capris and skirts most of the time. What would be a comfortable but cute shoe to wear that wouldn't require socks?
With so much walking, I'd suggest you plan to wear your shoes with socks, and your sandals can be your hot weather option. When you walk 6 or 8 miles in a day, you want to be 100% certain to minimize rubbing and chafing that cause blisters. Even if you only wear little socks that don't go above the top of the shoe, you'll be glad you did. At least bring some socks with you! Also bring moleskin and a small scissors to cut it with. Saved us even with socks and broken-in athletic-type shoes. I like Keens and Eccos for style and comfort. And frankly I don't worry much about cute, I go for comfort! (But my Keens are cute in a Keen-sort-of-way.)
I love wearing Keens on vacation. No socks required.
No socks needed for Ecco Yucatan sandals. Wore them for three weeks in Portugal and Spain and they were a perfect warm weather travel shoe-easy to go through ap security too. I tried them on at the Ecco outlet store for size but ordered them from Zappos.
The Spira "Mia" T-strap is a closed-toe sandal (slingback) with incredible comfort (it has a running shoe sole, and the top is soft leather you can wear with bare feet.) http://www.shoesopia.com/shop/product/1/685-119/Spira-Mia-Tstrap-Shoes-Black-Women.html The black ones are fairly expensive; the light blue and other light shades are discounted on many websites. They run 1/2 size large.
I have had really good luck with the Clarks Un.structured line. Just make sure you get a proper fit. I have found most of the time they are true-to-size, but the last pair I ordered (can't buy them locally) ran big. You can get the no-show socks (which do show a little) to protect against blisters and help with sweaty feet. Even though it might be a little fashion faux-pas-ish, it's still better than being in pain!
Look at Naots,, comfiest shoes ever, some have cork sole beds that are removeable( so can be replaced when wore, or just aired out) and they all seem to be lined with super soft leather. I only have a pair of their sandels ( named Paris appropriately and coincidently) and I have had then for 6 years now( replaced sole beds once) and they are the best walking sandal I have ever had . the shoes look super cute with skirts and capris as they are usually not heavy or clunky looking,
I love my Keens Venice H2, no socks needed. Also I have a pair of Merrill siren casita's that are a backless mary jane that I wear without socks but not good for rain. Also Clarks unstructured are great but some need socks. The unloop got me through 3 weeks of walking but I wore either tights or a low sock.
I have a pair of black Ecco MaryJanes that look great with eveything and also some Gabor (a German brand) dressier flats , with a silver buckle that look like Ferragamos. Both have nice rubbery soles which are not so thick they look dorky in cities. Neither needed breaking in.
Thanks for all the great feedback. I am looking into the mary jane style as it seems to fit my needs best. Many companies have a version so I will just have to see which works best for me. Being near Atlanta I have many places to choose from since I am wary of ordering on-line due to some funny shaped toes. I will probably go sockless but take the suggested back-up support just in case. Three months, six days, and 21 hours but whose counting!
Many online shoe stores do free returns. If you are to go sockless be certain to break them in before you go.
I love Merrell shoes. They have some that are cuter and easier to dress up but they can can handle a day walking on trails or pavement. They have anti-microbial stuff inside the shoe so they can be worn with or without socks.
My girlfriend wears the Clarks Un.structured footwear line without socks and has never had a blister wearing them without socks. I wear them myself and the leather linining work well. Stick with the soft leather footwear. Anything not leather lined will start to smell. Running shoes and sneakers without socks, we have been their and done that on a trip -- odor issues.
if you do not like socks try peds. just helps absorb wetness alittle and keeps your feet cleaner.
Have hated socks for 95% of my life until I was given a pair of smartwool socks. Pricey socks, but they do not smell even after 3 or 4 days of wearing! See them at REI, Whole Earth, most biking/camping/adventure gear stores. One pair really would be all you need in the summer. I took 3 pair for 15 days travel last winter.
