Climate In March/April

Hi all!

I live in the tropics, just north of the equator, so I have no experience on what to expect. I will be Europe this March/April. Can anyone tell me what kind of climate to expect? I can easily find the temperature ranges, but that doesn't make much sense to me. What should I expect, and how much and what kind of warm clothing should I be wearing and packing?

I will be in Paris, Germany and Austria from 20-28th March, Florence and Rome from 29th March to 3 April, Spain from 4th to 8th April, and finally London from 9-12th April.

Thank you for any advice!

This site will show you the averages for any given city.

Remember that dressing in removable layers is better than one bulky layer. So try an undershirt, sweater and jacket. If you get too warm, you drop the jacket.

I'll be in Germany this March as well and I plan on having doing the shirt/sweater thing as well as having a thick coat or two.

Thanks for the replies! So, am I safe to take it that a long sleeved tee, a sweater, and a fleece sports jacket with a pair of jeans is sufficient?

Late March is considered to be the beginning of Spring in Paris. The nights will be cooler - and your wardrobe sounds sufficient - with the exception of an umbrella. You will need one most likely. Temperature will be mid 40s to mid 50s (although that has been where things have been this week....).

Having layering options will give you enough choices to accommodate the differences from the norther regions (as parts of Germany remain colder longer than Paris for example) compared to Rome.

You might also want to bring a waterproof jacket. Also, a second pair of pants would be good. If your jeans get wet, they may take awhile to dry. Have a great trip!

Daryl, heed this information from someone who lives where it regularly gets colder than western Europe and the rest of the United States. I experienced snow in the higher elevations of Tuscany in the beginning of March. You'll be there in the end, so you will probably not see this. But know that this is the time of year that the temperature could be 0 Celsius or 22 Celsius.

You want something that will "cut the wind". This means that if it's windy you want something that will stop the wind from blowing through your clothes on to your body. A fleece will NOT do this! You need an outer layer that is made of a material like leather or canvas. It doesn't need to be a heavy coat, just not fleece. The wind will make you feel as much as 10 degrees Celsius colder than the temperature actually is.
