My husband received an email from United Airlines regarding something called Clear Plus which would cost us $204. Has anyone experienced it? If so, please share your thoughts. This is the description: "CLEAR Plus is our airport membership. With CLEAR Plus, you can move faster through airport security nationwide in our designated Lanes at TSA checkpoints. Our friendly Ambassadors help you verify your identity at a CLEAR Pod—so you can save time and avoid big lines." It looks as though it is just for travel with United. It sounds like it's TSA Pre-Approved "PLUS".
In the few airports that have Clear, you can use the TSA Precheck lines. You sign into a Clear terminal then can use the TSA precheck line.
Why not just get TSA Precheck?
Thanks Frank. We are TSA Pre-Approved but were wondering if the Clear Plus option is any better. According to a The Points Guy article (in 2019) it is better because there are so many who have TSA P-A. I'm wondering if being CP might work well for a while until everyone else opts in only to find the TSA P-A lines then getting shorter while the "newbie" line gets longer.
I don’t have it but I have watched people use it in the line right next to me. Advantage is you are “escorted” to the head of the precheck line.
I flew out of Raleigh Sunday and JFK today.
Clear just started in Raleigh. There was a line to use Clear. No wait for TSA.
At JFK Terminal 8, no Clear, no wait for TSA.
Don't forget, many of these travel websites get a commission if you sign up for something through their website. That's how they make money.
I have CLEAR, courtesy of United and free because of my status with UA. However, I have seen lots of times where the regular TSA PRE lanes have been faster than the CLEAR lines. Seen this a fair bit at my home airport, DEN, and also at ATL. Some of this could be timing and how many CLEAR staff are on hand and how many scanners are available
I have Global as well as Clear. With Clear, I do a quick scan of my boarding pass, look into the cameras, and am then escorted to the front of the TSAPre line. No ID needed , which is nice. For me it is worth it. My Amex Platinum covered the $189 cost
Mikliz97 that's a compelling argument for Clear Plus.
but not much use outside the US of A?
Clear plus ✅ compliments from my Amex card
We love using the fast lane / Clear
But avoid making eye contact with everyone you pass in the slow tsa line.
Look up the locations Clear is offered. If it makes sense to your travel definitely worth it! Also used in some stadiums.
@Nigel Clear is available only to U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents age 18 and older with valid government ID.

"But avoid making eye contact with everyone you pass in the slow tsa line."
This won't be a problem in Atlanta.... they will be laughing at you as they fly past you in the slow Clear line.
Seriously it's SLOW We have timed it. I have Clear, he doesn't. EVERY TIME he is waiting for me on the other side of security :) I no longer use it in ATL and only have it because it is faster in Orlando where my father lives (home of the worst run airport in the USA IMHO)
FYI this is not restricted to just United, it's open to the public. As for "friendly ambassadors" you got a 50/50 shot between 'friendly' or 'surly'
If you fly Delta out of ATL and opt for the new Digital ID screen it's incredibly fast, it's a facial recognition technology but you have to opt in every time you check in!
Facial recognition is the next thing. No more ID's. You will have your face scanned at security so no need for ID, your face scanned as you board your plane so no need for boarding pass, and eventually your face scanned at immigration like those who have Global Entry.
Thank you, everyone, for your knowledge and experiences. We're still on the fence but have time to decide. I'll post here if we do use Clear Plus and what our experiences are.
Carol--We fly tomorrow morning and I have Clear, but my daughter only has TSAPre. We use a checkpoint that is only for Pre/clear/global, so shorter than all the other lines. You have my curiosity up, so I will see how tomorrow goes between the two of us with two different lines at the same checkpoint;)
mikliz97, it will be interesting to see which one wins! I'm also wondering how Clear Plus does in high season.
Carol— we both went through at the same time, so a tie! Lol! Then I was selected for additional screening which was crazy as I have on leggings and a tunic, so no pockets, belt etc. then both my bag and my daughters were gone through. The TSA ladies were very nice though. It was our fault and we all laughed about it. We had a tin of panettone in my bag and a small loaf of lemon bread wrapped in foil in my daughters. It didn’t even dawn in me, but I never bring this type of stuff. Grandma will get a laugh out of what we went through to get these treats to her😊
Having CLEAR can be a major timesaver. It’s certainly worthwhile if covered as a credit card perk or through other avenues. I’ve used it at several airports (JFK, DFW, MCO, ATL, etc). In Orlando it made the difference between moments in line or the posted estimate wait of 1 hour through TSA. In Atlanta the CLEAR/TSA precheck line was quite long.
One thing to note (which is always subject to change) is that when I traveled through MCO and ATL last year there were two different CLEAR queues. One was just for CLEAR and the other was CLEAR with TSA precheck. I missed that distinction the first time using CLEAR at ATL and was subjected to the non precheck standards. At MCO the lines were vastly separated by the regular TSA lines. Thankfully the CLEAR representatives were helpful in getting individuals to the correct queue.
CLEAR Plus
Thank you, raymonelee. I'm beginning to wonder how many different ways the airline industry can shave the perks to make more money. #feelingmanipulated.
