Any tips on driving around Germany on Christmas Day? We may have to take a 4.5 hour drive. Our drive will be between Kaiserslautern and Munich.
Not sure what kind of tips you are looking for, tips about the weather, snow tires, where to get gas, where to eat, etc. They are predicting lots of snow this winter, so personally, I would take a train and forget the driving. As to restaurants, many are open in the cities, but not so sure about out in the countryside. Stores are all closed on the 25th and 26th, as both days are holidays. Everything will close down early on the 24th, around 14:00 or will just be closed the entire day. If you need food or drinks, get them early.
Traditionally, it's a day a lot of people will be on the road to visit family. If there's a lot of snow on the road that could cause some very time-consuming traffic jams. In that case, consider taking the train instead.
I don't think we can avoid the car on this trip. Thanks for the tips we were just concerned that things would be shut down and travel would be difficult. I guess Gas and food would be the main concerns.
we are traveling with children.
We don't have a route selected yet so your advice is appreciated.
Don't worry about closed gas stations. Stores will be closed but many restaurants and 90% of all gas stations (which includes 100% of those along the autobahn) will be open. And gas stations will sell a lot of common grocery items as well in case you get hungry but don't want to sit down for a full meal.
Also, the rest stations along the autobahn serve surprisingly good food.
