Chocolate & Sweets

I'm traveling to the following: London, Paris, Amsterdam, Munich, Rothenburg, Salzburg, Venice, Florence, and Rome.

What's the best chocolate bar to be found in those areas? (I also have plans to get my fill on Kinder Surprises and consume them before arriving in the US as per the FDA and their stupid policy - which of those cities have the Surprises?)

Not a fan of cereal in my chocolate. Fruit, nuts, gooey stuff, fine - just not cereal. Milk and Dark chocolate both great.

Yes, we have some Cadbury's, Toblerone's, Lindt, and Ritter Sport, but I would imagine the varieties to be even greater over there than the pesky limited selection available at drugstores here in the US.

I welcome other candy and sweets too :)

Lion Bars! (But not the peanut ones.) I know you can find them in Britain and France. Also, Curly-Wurly.

If you like Mentos, keep an eye out Europe-wide for interesting flavors.

We just started to get Almond Roca at our local Costco and I like that.

Lovely purple Milka bars.

Liquorice All Sorts - no brand name required, the ones from Aldi and Lidl are just as good as or better than the Bassets.

Try Drop in Amsterdam but be prepared to not like it - or you may love it.

Mozart Balls.

In my experience you can get Kinder everywhere, but especially in Germany. Cheaper at Aldi or Lidl.

I don't think I have ever had bars of chocolate in either Venice or Rome. But then when I am in Italy I often have cake for breakfast.

We went bonkers over the hot chocolate at Jacques Genin in Paris, it's their bar chocolate melted to order. That, along with a millefeuille (also made to order) and some of their assorted chocolates really hit the spot.

I really like Thornton's fudge - I usually bring home a half dozen bags when we come from England (and have my mom bring some home when she visits my sis). The chocolate smothered and the butter tablet (crumbly)...oh my. The chocolate is yummy as well, but the fudge does it for me.

I also kept this article so when I visit Paris in Oct I can hopefully hit up one or two of these shops. I actually went to Aux Merveilleux de Fred when we were in NYC last month, and want to hit them when we are in Paris and London. The little whip cream meringue thingys are so light and delicious.

I am partial to Perugina chocolates in Italy. My favorite is dark chocolate and I think you should conduct taste tests at all the locations to see what you like best.....ha!

Lion Bars have cereal in them.

I did a whole post about chocolate in London which is here. In Paris my favourites are the Maison du Chocolat chain and Richart in Saint German-des-Pres.

In Germany, don't miss Ritter Sport. I really like the Olympia bar. In Austria, look for anything by Zotter.

Fürst chocolates in Salzburg, right off the main square. Supposedly originated Mozartkügeln - theirs are in blue wrappers, not the standard red. Their chocolate has no preservatives and is meant to be eaten right away while fresh. I believe it is well-known landmark so locals can point you to it.

I also love Lion, in fact enjoyed one tonight purchased from my local UK Shoppe. Mind you I've also found them at Walmart!

I love Percy Pigs from Marks and Spencer.

IMHO the best cafe/pastry shop (not necessarily the best chocolate) in Salzburg is Niemetz, a small house near the tunnel on the Karajanplatz. My idea of luxury is sitting at Niemetz sipping a coffe with a piece of cake.

In Florence the best chocolate shop is Rivoire in piazza della Signoria (very very expensive).

It's not a bar, but if you are into ice cream, try the chocolate at the original Berthillon shop at 31 Rue St. Louis-en-I'Ile in Paris

I bought a pack of Milka Choco Cows at an Austrian import store recently. Butter cookie cows with chocolate on the back. Wunderbar!

Hello aslperformingarts. I think the best milk chocolate bar was made in France. I do not remember the brand name. I think its flavor was described as having a mild caramel flavor in it, but caramel is not in it. That milk chocolate bar made in France has a much higher price than milk chocolate bars of same size made by any other business in any country in the world. Descriptions and evaluations of milk chocolate bars (and dark chocolate bars) of several popular name brands are in magazine articles. Incidently, some of the Cadbury chocolate for sale at England is of much better quality and flavor than the Cadbury chocolate for sale in retail stores (Walgreens, Wal Mart, supermarket grocery stores) located in the United States of America.

MOZARTKUGELn ---- the most wonderful goodie that I always stock up on in Vienna. While you can shell out lots of money for the "real thing", there are excellent ones to be had both at Hofer (which is Aldi in Austria) and at Merkur. They are both slightly different from the "real" ones, they are nonetheless absolutely wonderful. The Merkur ones are not Kugeln, i.e totally round, but flat on one side(?) and I think they are bit heavier on the marzipan - matter of taste. (Merkur is a supermarket chain).

Merkur has Rittersport on special, as well as Manner Schnitten, until the 19th.

Hofer also has a most delicious, very crispy flat cookie, which consists mainly of seeds. I love those.

I like to pick up several different types of small inexpensive chocolate bars from the local markets and shops. While they may not be gourmet, I've always found them to be tasty and sometimes very unique treats. No matter what you get or how expensive it is or isn't, it is still going to be a treat! I'm a big fan of Galaxy Chocolate candies and bars. I have picked them up several times in London. They are cheap and easy to find in any market or shop, but they are still a million times better than what you get in the U.S.!

Galler, a Belgian chocolate, found there, of course, and also sometimes in Monoprix in France/Paris.

This past May I returned from a trip to Germany and brought back Kinder Surprises for my friends children, they remembered them when stationed in Italy. I just realized I had packed them in my carry on & not checked baggage and made it through Frankfurt & San Francisco without an inspection. Enjoy your time there.

When are you travelling? Tuebingen Germany is having a chocolate festival in December 1-12. http://www.chocolart.de/ (the site is in German, but Chrome has a translate function)

Can you tell I am excited about going to this festival?

My absolute favorite is Baci, which you'll find throughout Italy. I like it far better than much more expensive chocolates, and happily, they're not widely available in the US – therefore, less temptation.

Also, while there's lots of controversy about the best gelato, Grom makes a dark chocolate gelato with chocolate chips that is amazing. I always make sure to stop for that at least once on a trip.

Ok for London-Curly Wurly and Wunderbars as well as Cadbury's bubbles bar
Paris-Mi Cho Ko dark chocolate covered caramels
You will be able to find Kinder Surprises everywhere. I just saw Princess and Minion options. I also like the Kinder eggs that are filled with soft chocolate and no surprise. As well as Bueno bars.

There is no doubt that France and Spain, the countries have found some emerging glances of chocolate industry and in this concern you have to specify an efficient and quality cafeteria. According to my own experience, I can share the name of Maestro Churrero as the professionals had served some special burgers and chocolates when I visited. Thanks for the conversation and all the best for your trip...

Recognizing that this is an older post, but will add in Zotter Chocolate for Austria. This can be found in supermarkets. High quality, Austrian made chocolate. Their signature is very weird flavors. They have an excellent chocolate factory/tour in Styria which is worth a detour.

Any Belgian chocolate would be outstanding. Belgian law dictates higher cocoa and cocoa butter contents than the EU regulations demand for various chocolate products. I have had Neuhaus chocolates many times - they are excellent - try some if you get the chance.
