Chip and pin atm card

Mt current ATM card only has the magnetic strip. Would it be a good idea to get a chip and pin card before leaving for Europe in September?

Your current card will work just fine in an ATM. I would suggest that you inform your bank/credit union of your up coming travel dates and where you will be traveling.

No problem with the mag strip card which can be used at all ATM's. There are some chip and pin debit and credit cards issued in the US but they are few and far between. Unlike Europe, the standard for cards adopted by almost all banks and credit unions is chip and signature. You might have problems trying to use a US chip card at some gas stations, public transportation ticket machines.

I have a debit (atm) card with magnetic strip only. I've used it at ATMs in France and England the past couple of weeks with no problems. My credit card has a chip to be used with signature. The little machine spits out a piece of paper to be signed. So no problem there either. Some people here do all their business using their chip and pin cards, even at convenience stores where the purchases are small. So far, I'm using cash for everything but hotel bills and a couple of clothing purchases. The little machines have a side slot for the magnetic strips, like the ones I've seen in California.

Your current card should be just fine for cash withdrawals. Fun fact: in Iceland, I never even had to take out any cash, because literally everywhere took card, even convenience stores. Most other countries I've visited, cash seemed to be the preferred payment method, which was a bit surprising.
