Chicago (not Europe, I know)

Hi all. I'm moving to Chicago at the beginning of September and have some questions for people who live(d) there. I don't have a smartphone and am looking for paper bus route maps. The Transit Chicago website has great PDFs of bus route maps but when I print them the edges always cut off and I'm left with 1/4 of a map. Getting a smartphone isn't an option at this point because I'll be on a strict budget for a while. Any other navigation tips? Any good apps to download to my wifi-dependent iPod Touch? I will look at Maps with Me for iPods - saw that suggestion on here today and it's a great one. Thanks very much!

You might be able to print the CTA maps fully by adjusting your print settings to "fit to page." Or you can print larger maps on several sheets by selecting "print current view" and then adjusting the zoom/view on your screen before printing. That can be handy to actually see what is on the map. The CTA has an app that will tell you train (and bus I think) arrival times/tracking. I use it on my smartphone for the trains and you can customize it for the routes you normally take. I'm not sure if you can get or use the app for an iPad Mini, but check to see. PS - It'll be nice to have another Cardinals fan in Chicago...

Now, Douglas, maybe Sarah's moving just because she's a Cubs fan. Ever think of that? (signed)

Maybe the city of Chicago website has something? There's usually some helpful tips and phone numbers listed there.
Once here, the CTA headquarters is usually a good spot for getting a full-sized city map with transit routes. It's in the West Loop at 567 W. Lake Street, easily accessible by the Green Line in the direction of 63rd and Ashland. A fabulous restaurant called Saigon Sisters is right down the street, so pick up lunch if you're headed there!

The transitchicago.com website has no fewer than 18 apps that will work on an iPod Touch (I counted). You won't have any problem. You'll find Chicago a very-easy-to-navigate big city. Except for a few diagonals, the streets are in a numbered north-south east-west grid pattern and I think you'll find that the overall city layout is easy to master. And wherever you are, the lake is always east.

Have you tried TripAdvisor? You may get more responses from that place rather than a site like this that is a European exchange.

You'll find that you can purchase a map with transit info. I have several for NYC and it's good to have even when you have an app! Here's one I found on line. http://www.amazon.com/Chicago-Downtown-Recreation-Transit-Edition/dp/0938011669/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1376005028&sr=8-10&keywords=chicago+transit+maps I bought a book like this for NYC when I moved here from the midwest. http://www.amazon.com/Little-Black-Book-Chicago-Edition/dp/1441310738/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_z What part of Chicago are you moving to? I used to ride the bus from 2900 north at the lake front to downtown every day. :) I rode the 56 Bus. Pam

Oh, no, I'm going to miss you in our travel meetings! Hopefully you can make one more in August. Well, I have no maps and transit advice, so my only advice is, don't become a Cubs fan! ;) And, oh, it will be so much easier traveling when you can take a direct flight to Europe!

Just go to the vistor's center (called a TI in Europe) on Michigan Ave across from the Bean. There you can get all the transit maps you want from a table size map showing every bus line, stop, etc., to a pocket map with just the major routes. You can also buy a multi day transit card if you were using the buses/CTA a lot.

Thanks for all your helpful advice! Though I've been to Chicago many times, it was always with people who knew the city better than me so I didn't have to pay much attention. Sorry to disappoint everyone, but I'm neither a Cardinals nor a Cubs fan. I don't care for sports aside from the Olympics. I will post my question on Tripadvisor as well. I wanted to start here because this is a much smaller forum and I feel like I "know" people here.

Thank you all for your suggestions, and thank you Michael as well for the link. I'll play around with the print options and see what I can do. Glad that none of you Cubs fans are holding my sports neutrality against me. :)
