checking Rick Steves luggage

Has anyone had experience with checking Rick Steves wheeled luggage? Is it well suited for the abuse it will surely get? We like to check our bags when traveling home.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I have the regular, non-wheeled bag and it held up quite well. I even had two bottles of wine in the bag and they made it through okay.

We each have the 21" Rick Steves' Roll Aboard. We were in Europe for 8 weeks traveling on trains every 4-6 days and loved the Roll Aboard luggage. I went to Israel recently and the luggage still looks new.

It is VERY durable! Had not problem with it as a carry-on with KLM. Did not use it has a carry-on with Lufthansa.

We had no problems with it on the cobblestone streets in Europe.

We checked the Rick Steves wheeled luggage for two Europe trips. Both times coming back the two bags we have were expanded. We put luggage straps around them and they were just fine. There is no damage to speak of on either bag. I use my wheeled one for business trips all the time too and it is great.

We check our bags most of the time. Especially compared to my former Samsonite suitcases, Rick Steves bags hold up beautifully.

Betty,
I have checked RS bags several times and only had one problem - I lost the loose [male] end of the carryon strap. I didn't buckle it closed before checking it, and I guess it got smashed. The RS store sent me a new one, but it's a different size so I need to replace both parts of the buckle. It's on my "to do" list...
cheers,
Kathleen

Hi Betty,

My husband has been using his RS wheeled bag since Spring 2003. It's been to EU several times, and all over the US and Canada. He routinely checks the bag so he doesn't have to deal with the liquids-in-a-ziploc issue and the bag has really held up well.

It is very sturdy, and only shows a few smudges and wear-marks (I just ran downstairs to check!) The wheels are still in great shape, too.

The bag has two levels for the handle - medium height and tall (which he loves - it's taller than my TravelPro) but the bag does not expand, if that's an issue for you.

Bon voyage!

Thanks to you all for taking time to reply to my question. I have been so impressed by the generosity of the RS crowd.
