Checking on the trip itinerary.

Hi,

We are a family of 5 (2 senior citizens + 2 adults + 1 child). We are planning to do Barcelona - Costa Brava - Venice and then Rome.

Wanted to check if this is a good enough itinerary. Or should we drop Costa Brave (San Sebastian/Sevilla). Any thoughts?

regards,
ap

Barcelona and Costa Brava work very well together, easy to do. San Sebastián and Seville would be more trading. I would keep Costa Brava even though I love SN Sebastián and Seville, too much traveling in such a short time.
I guess you’d fly BCN to Venice, then fly or train to Rome.
If you don’t have your long haul flights booked, I would chose one country.

18 days

Does that include your days flying to/from Europe?

9 days in spain (4 days barcelona + 4 days CB)

I am not sure how you are doing the math.

To get better input, it would help if you gave the date you plan to depart from home, the date you arrive in Europe/Spain and the date your return flight is. ( presumably from Rome?)

Hey yes 18 days covers the travel time too.

Land in Barcelona on the 1st June and drive straight to CB.
CB: 1st June - 5th
TRAVEL 5TH
Barcelona: 5th June - 9th June
TRAVEL 9TH
Venice: 9th June - 12th
TRAVEL 12TH
Romes: 12th june - 18th June

I think Venice is worth at least one more full day, but I haven't been to Spain so I can't tell you to shorten that time. And I wouldn't recommend any less time for Rome. So not much help I guess really.....

I would never pay to go to Europe to go to the beach. The beaches are better in North America.

Not sure how many days you have, but if you have time, I would include Seville and Madrid/Toledo.

I don't think you are counting your days quite right. If you are arriving on the 1st and want to be in Barcelona on the 5th then you have 3 days, not four, on the costa Brava (the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th). What is your goal for those days? Little towns, beaches, etc. As stated above, I would not 'waste' much time on beaches in Europe but i guess it depends on where you are from. You also only really have 3 days in Barcelona - the 5th you are traveling, and the 9th you are leaving - so you have the 6th , 7th, and 8th. That's not much time for a first trip to Barcelona. Also - you plan to pick up a car on your arrival day to drive to where ever you are planning to stay in the Costa Brava? That's a bad idea after a long haul flight.

You also only have two days in Venice once you figure in traveling. A better plan might be to skip 'staying' in the Costa Brava - this will eliminate the need for a car and also eliminate one hotel stay. Add two days to Barcelona and on one of them do a day trip to Girona and/or other town in the Costa Brava. The other 'extra' day spend in Barcelona. Then add the other two nights to Venice. If you end up with what you feel is too many days there are a ton of great day trip options from Venice. Also if your reason for the Costa Brava was beach then when you are in Venice you can go to the beach as a day trip (Lido).

Your amount of time in Rome is good, you might even be able to get in a day trip form there (I like Orvieto).

To be clear for the folks who haven't been to Catalunya: Girona is not on the coast. It's about 30 miles from Begur, which may be the quickest spot on the coast to reach from Girona. I don't know, though, because I am one who doesn't go to beaches in Europe.

I love Girona, and it's a great base for the little medieval town of Besalu (inland) and for Figueres (inland--Dali Theatre and Museum). Once in Figueres (reachable by train), one can certainly take a picturesque bus ride to the lovely town (popular destination) of Cadaques--which is on the coast. However, that's a long trip and not what I would recommend for someone who is simply looking for beach time.
