Checking bags with 5 1/2 hour layover

We have a short domestic flight to LAX. Then we have a 5 1/2 hour layover at LAX. Then we fly direct/nonstop to CDG. (All on one Delta booking- short flight is a Skywest regional/Delta flight then Delta to Paris.
Would you check your (full size-not carry on size) bags at your original departure point all the way to CDG. Or would you check your bag to LAX, pick it up, recheck it a few hours before departure to CDG?

I've never had a flight to Europe with such a long layover, and hear that it is likely to get lost in transition with a longer layover.

I realize it's all luck of the draw. I know with the Skywest regional flights even all carry on is gate checked. But we are going to have larger bags that definitely have to be checked on both flights.

Check it through from you original flight if everything is booked on one ticket. Just read an article in today's paper that the risk of miss-placed luggage is less than one percent. Check it, you will be fine.

Check through to CDG as it’s all on one ticket.

Hummmm, that seems to be abnormal and I would fear messing the whole process up. Normally your bag is checked all the way thru on one ticket. What do you plan on doing for 5 hours with large bags in tow? And then you would have to stand in line to recheck and go thru security again. Sounds too complicated!

Agree Margie, definitely doesn't make sense in a practical way because we'd have to go to baggage at LAX, stand in line to recheck, then go through TSA again. We definitely thought of that. I guess I'm just really hoping we get the bags at CDG (don't we all!) as we've only done carry on only for our last few trips to Europe, but this time we need a larger bag. And it's causing a bit of anxiety on my part. Obviously, there's nothing I really can do to control whether it gets there!

Appreciate everyone's input! Thank you!

Airlines generally don’t let you short check a bag unless an overnight layover is involved so you probably wouldn’t even have a choice to retrieve it at LAX. Just check your bag and don’t worry about it.

KD,
We always take the first flight out in the morning from our "home" airport (located an hour and a half from our home) to the airport where our overseas departure flight is scheduled. We typically land mid-morning. Our flight overseas typically departs late afternoon or early evening. So that's a layover of several hours. We always have checked luggage. In 27 trips, there has never been a time our checked luggage has not made the connecting flight. Hope I didn't just jinx us for our flights later this month. I've never worried about it not making the flight. However, if it didn't I figure the airline will get it to me sooner or later. And if I lost everything I'd figure out how to replace it.

Happy Travels!

KD, I understand the anxiety. We watched one of our tour mates on the BOI go a week before her bag finally caught up with us. I now carry a few necessary items and my meds with me in my backpack. Think positive, it does seem things have gotten a bit better than what they were for a time. Don’t stress, have a great trip!

Thank you all. We had tour mates (2 friends traveling together) on our last RS tour who went most of the tour without their luggage. I just can't imagine! Keeping our fingers crossed!
