I just checked the price on our Auto Europe rental & found we can save $20 on our Europcar rental or I can save almost $70 by switching to Hertz. Now we have a decision to make with just 8 days before we pick up our rental. We have always rented through Europcar and have been happy. Not so sure about renting through Hertz. We would (possibly, never a guarantee) be receiving a Fiat Panda from Hertz instead of a Smartfour from Europe car. We will be picking up at the downtown Parma location and dropping off at Pisa airport. Anyone have experience with Hertz at these locations? I believe I have read that Fiat Pandas are less than desirable. Of course you are never guaranteed a certain car, only the class of car.
Fiat Panda? Ugh, I couldn't think of anything worse.
That's what I thought. We will more than likely just be happy with the $20 savings. Thanks!
Jeanine, you May also want to check that the insurance coverage is comparable. When making bookings through AutoEurope, I have often found I couldn’t get zero-deductible coverage through Hertz, and deliberately chose another vendor.
I did check, and yes, the zero deductible is available on both. However, we decided to stay with Europcar. 😊
I saved a chunk of change once by checking back with Auto Europe. Renting a GPS, if you want to, is far more expensive through Hertz than Europcar.
Update: when I called Auto Europe to request my $20 refund, the transaction quick and smooth...until I printed my new voucher and saw that I now have a €48 one way drop fee that wasn't disclosed! I called back and the representative went out of her way to make it right. At first they offered me Hertz at a lower price. When I told her that we really wanted to stay with Europecar, she found a way to make it happen and still get my $20 refund. The first representative dropped the ball, the second representative restored my faith in Auto Europe. Just beware if you call to make sure drop fees are not charged that were not originally.
