Cheap Paris accomodation needed

I know that 'cheap' is relative to everyone's situation, so here's the scoop....I would like to stay in a budget hotel for 5 nights....and love the idea of rue cler, but apparently it has zippo for night life. is that true? and if so, does it matter if it is only a stone's throw away from other things....eiffel tower, etc.

also, if i were to want to spend less than $100 Canadian on a room, where might you suggest....and I'd appreciate you not commenting on how cheap I am.....it's not a choice at this point in my life! I was going to stay in hostels, but for two of us, some of them aren't so great, and B&B's are almost as much as some of the budget hotels.

I don't need fancy (obviously). Clean would be appreciated. And location is very important. Probably the most important thing for us.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks.

Try the Ibis hotels. We really liked them. Friendly staff, nice rooms, free breakfast, and air conditioning, which was nice since it was REALLY hot the week we were there. Ibis has some really good deals on this summer now.

We stayed at the one near Gare du Nord, which made it easy to get to public transportation for the rest of Paris.

Thank you so much for that....I will do some research tomorrow on the Ibis hotels.

Hi Heather,

I got a great rate through http://en.parisinfo.com, which is the website for the Paris Hotel and Convention association. They offer some great discounts from some member hotels - often around 50%. I stayed in the Kyriad Brancion, which was a low-end but comfortable and clean hotel about a ten-minute walk from the metro. The rate I paid for two of us was about $75 CAN/night in August. Take a look, and when you find a place research it on Trip Advisor to make sure the comments are reasonable.

Hotel Diana, I have not stayed there yet,, will in a few weeks, but the area I do know and its great. I got a single for 75 euros, and the doubles are 95, bit over your limit, but just an idea. Has a/c and all extras.

The only hotel in Paris that I have personal experience with, and is probably in your price range, is the Hotel du Commerce in the 5th (Latin Quarter). I've stayed there several times and recommend it for its rates and cleanliness. There is an area on the ground level where you can fix your own breakfast. The area is full of shops, a street market several days a week, and several nearby Metro stops.

Don't worry about being cheap! I'm amazed by the spending habits of people who REALLY NEED to watch their money and don't, and then the people who have financial security but carefully and wisely spend their precious resources. (I guess maybe that's how each group got in the place they are...I know, there are many exceptions and I wouldn't want to offend the big spenders who truly have lots of money to blow...) But I digress. I think The Tiquetonne can't be beat as an adorable, very quaint Parisian budget hotel. For 55 EUR per night for a double with bath on a fabulous, non-touristy pedestrian-only street, bustling with Parisians out late into the night, it's an incredible bargain. The location, near Les Halles (closest Metro, Etienne Marcel) is extremely convenient to Paris tourist sights. We've stayed on rue Cler, too, but I found it somewhat boring and crawling with tourists. We stayed at the much more authentic Tiquetonne for a week and never encountered any other Americans at the hotel or in the many (really good and inexpensive) restaurants in the immediate area.) The Tiquetonne hotel guests we encountered were from other European countries. You can read reviews on Tripadvisor. We originally found it on a web search and from the reviews on the Eurocheapo website (a great source for information on how to have a great time and save money in many European cities):

With so many other places to spend money in Paris, the Tiquetonne is a great choice (even for those who could easily spend many times that amount but carefully CHOOSE not to do so.) We have been to Paris 4 times in the past 6 years and always find it a great city to enjoy for its many free and low cost treasures.

Hi Heather,

Just wanted to second the Hotel du Commerce suggestion! It's perfectly situated in the Latin Quarter and was clean and quiet. Literally a 5 minute walk from Ile de la Cite with Notre Dame, and handy to several metro lines. Bathrooms and showers down the hall, though. If you're OK with that, it's a good option.

I second the Hotel de Nevers (near Place Republique). Very clean, very friendly. Pretty good neighborhood not far from the Marais.
