Chase credit card issues

Over the last couple of months I have had major issues using my Chase credit cards to book hotels and guides in Europe that use pay links. I get repeated “3DS authentication failed” errors.

On one occasion I called Chase, told them the charge was valid and they told me it was good to try again. Came back with same error.

Have resorted to using a non-Chase card that at least sends me a text asking if the charge is valid.

Any thoughts?

My CapOne Mastercard (which has no FTF fees) produces either screen, email, or text to verify myself, I believe it is onscreen (honestly, it is so seamless I can't remember which), and never a blockage. Never an issue while using it while abroad.

I have a Chase card and occasionally run into issues when making online purchases from other countries. I don’t think it’s specific to Chase—it seems to be a broader issue with U.S. cards.

For example, a few weeks ago I had trouble buying tickets for the Seville Cathedral in Spain. My Chase card was declined at first, but when I tried again a few days later with the same card, the purchase went through without any problems.

While I have two Chase cards , I don't use them in Europe due to foreign transaction fees . I use several other cards that do not charge that fee . Capital One is one of them , Also Barclay , and Andrews Federal credit union work well

My Chase card has no foreign transaction fees. You definitely want to travel with a card that has no foreign transaction fees.

I had a problem last October using my Chase card for a G7 taxi in Paris. I had used it before and it was set up in the app and suddenly it was not working. I changed the card in the app to AMEX and it worked fine. The Chase card not working with G7 is kind of a known issue. This year, I've not tried the Chase card for any pre-purchases but have used it to book a hotel stay that is not a pay ahead booking.

I just went back thru my itinerary to see what venues I've booked and paid for on my upcoming trip. I have only booked one museum (because I have 3 different passes or "friends" cards so don't need to) and I paid that with AMEX to get miles.

I usually take my AMEX and try to pay with that as often as I can especially for hotels and bigger ticket items. I always have the Chase card and have a 3rd CC that is the Costco Citi card. I never use that one but it's available if there are issues with the other 2.

I would definitely not have the Chase card as my only CC just because of the issues I've had with G7.

I have had this issue in the past with other credit cards. I feel like I called the card service and told them it was a 3DS authentication error and they could resolve it for me. You need to talk to the technical department. Otherwise the workaround is to use Paypal.

Just wanted to add I was able to use my Chase VISA to purchase tickets to Monet's home in Giverny. No AMEX option. It was only 13.5E so may be no problem due to the insignificant amount???

I think this is a Chase problem with some 3D Secure transactions.

Just about every year one or two of my Chase online purchases fails due to 3D secure. When this happens, I use a Citibank credit card which sends me a text to authenticate. I’ve read that others have been successful with Apple Pay.

I loaded the Chase Mobile app on my phone this year wondering if that might help resolve the issue. You might also check to make sure that Chase has your mobile number as primary.

The Points Guy has an article about this:

Laura, I think your response nails this issue and I appreciate you sending the link to the article. It appears to be a Chase issue and the people in support have been unable to help resolve it. Time to look for another card that takes authentication steps when making these international transactions. Thanks all for the responses.

Yes, you are dealing with a 3DS issue. Most US crds do not include 3DS as a standard option, you might be able to work with your card issuer to either resolve the issue, or turn on 3DS authentification.

3DS is similar to two factor authentication (where your your bank for example texts you a code) except that three parties are involved, you make the transaction, the vendor sends info to your card, your card then sends a code to both you and the vendor, you enter the code, and the vendor matches it with the code they were sent.

The EU uses 3DS for most internet transactions, because it is secure, in the US, we have not really figured it out.

Start with your card issuer, it may be a feature that they can just turn on.

If any of your payees accept Google Pay I believe they use 3DS authentication. You may need to have the app on your phone similar to what Laura suggested with the Chase app.

Before we left for Italy and Greece last fall, I had issues with our Chase card and purchasing Acropolis tickets. My husband called Chase and after 2 more tries, it worked. We had no other issues booking tickets from home, nor while using it on our trip. As others have said, we also have AMEX and Capital One cards in addition to our Chase card which do not charge foreign transaction fees, and they are all loaded in Apple Pay.

I've not had a problem with Chase Visa, but I have had issues with Citibank MasterCard. And the Norwegian rail company VY wil not accept any cards online from North America, so we had to use PayPal for our tickets.
