May I assume that cars used in Germany are "wired" the same as those they export to NAmerica? Can I charge my Kindle while driving? I don't trust the adapters in the hotels after frying some devices in the past.
Sure, absolutely the same.
It's not the adapters, it's the transformer. You know the big block that sits between your computer and electric socket? You want to be sure it can handle 120 - 240 volts. The adapter is just to make sure you can plug the device into the outlet.
Rhonda, I'd suggest checking the Charger for your Kindle, to determine if it's designed for "world operation". If the Input Voltage is listed as "100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz", it should work fine in Europe with only an inexpensive Plug Adapter. I'd recommend checking the same thing on ALL the other electrical / electronic devices you'll be travelling with as well. If you haven't bought Plug Adapters yet, I know several locations in the Seattle area where you can obtain these. Cheers!
I charged my Nook in France and had no problem at all. I don't think the European outlets in hotels will fry your ereader. I've charged my iphone as well, never a problem. IMO, you should have no problems.
You'll have to do a search if you have an older Kindle, but the Kindle 3 adapter says: AC Input 100-240 Volts, 0.15 Amps, 50/60 Hz
DC Output 5.0 Volts, 0.85 Amps You'll need a standard round plug (continental Europe) adapter. You can also charge off a computer USB port, but don't try charging off another USB adapter like for an iPhone, unless you verify compatibility beforehand. Charging off of USB also takes longer.
Amazon sells a Kindle charger kit for $9.87. Kit includes a rapid car charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter. It'll work here or in Europe.
