Changing last minute travel plans.

I was scheduled to fly back to the US on Tuesday. On Sunday night I came down with the worst case of food poisoning I have had in years. It continued into Monday.

Tuesday morning I was in no mood to sit on a plane for eight hours. So I made a list of things I would have to change if I postponed my trip.

First, I made sure my hotel would extend my stay. They could.

Next the flight. Luckily, bad weather was expected at my destination so American sent a note saying anyone who wanted to change to another day could do so at no charge. I tried changning it all on their app and website but they were having "technical difficulties."

So I called expecting to be on hold for hours. After getting through all the taped garbage and trying to convince AI that I wanted to speak to someone, I was connected immediately to an agent. (I was in the UK but called the US number.)

I was able to change with no problem to today.

I then had another flight to change and could do this online. This, did cost a bit more for some change fees. (No enough to warrant putting in a claim to my travel insurance.)

Then two hotel reservations. Even though it was last minute, the hotels modified my reservations with no charge or penalty. (I have status with both chains.)

Then an easy change with a car rental reservation. (Also status.)

The only problems were the doctor's appointments. These had to be moved to way in the future.

I used Google Voice for all the calls back to the US which cost me nothing.

So, if problems occur, don't panic. Make out a list of what changes you need to make and get to it. If calling, use Google Voice while on wifi for free calls to the US and Canada.

Oh yeah, and give second thoughts to supermarket sushi.

It sounds like you’re making the best out of a very bad situation. Hope you feel 100% ASAP.
Glad you were able to make the necessary arrangements, and not incur excessive additional costs.

Supermarket sushi - that sounds fishy! I guess wasabi isn’t like Pepto-Bismol, besides the extreme color differences.

Thanks for the tips - to stay calm and not go into panic mode. Panic mode usually causes quick and many times wrong decisions.
Oh, and the tip about avoiding supermarket sushi - it’s been moved to the top of my ‘don’t eat list’. Sorry you had a suffer through an awful, dreaded travel ailment. Also top of my ‘things to avoid while traveling’ list.

Hello Frank II

I have had food poisoning three times and know how horribly unpleasant it can be for 24 hours or more. And then you are so weak afterwards.

Obviously you are greatly improved and recovered or. you would not be able to write such a well organized and well written discussion.

It seems like you also had some good luck with some of the changes as well as very good customer service. And maybe more importantly, you did not panic.

You are a seasoned traveler.

Not all of us on this forum are and to make everything worse for me, I am a panickier by nature. After my recent disaster when American changed my flight to Japan, I am trying to learn how to panic less.

I handled the second change much better than the first with far more positive results.

Take a deep breath, get some sleep and then make out a list of what needs to be done before the phone calls, emails and text messages.

Food poisoning while traveling is the worst!

I had it once in the San Francisco area and we were living in upstate NY. Thankfully we were at my parents house, so I was miserable, but at "home" vs a hotel etc. I do remember that red eye flight back to NY. That was 30 years ago, and I still remember the panic getting on the plane. This is one reason I bring Immodium with me on trips. At least the vomiting had stopped before we got to the airport. Those were the most miserable few days.

I am glad your logistics worked out so well:)

So, I flew back to the US today.

Rather than choose the fancy premium meals, I thought I would order the "Bland" special meal for people with digestive issues.

The flight attendant comes by to tell me she ate my appetizer by accident but the main course is fine. I got a regular appetizer of salmon and salad.

The main course consisted of boiled chicken, creamed spinach, asparagus, carrots and SPICY mashed sweet potatoes. (Spicy?)

The snack served just before landing for the bland diet was a large plate of roasted vegetables covered in pepper some rice and a big plate of fruit. (Lots of fiber for a digestive issue diet.)

This was my first time ordering a "special" meal and the last.

That bland menu sounds odd- spinach and asparagus?

And how do you accidentally eat a passenger's appetizer.? I have flight attendant friends that fly international. They bring their inflight meals with them.

My worst food poisoning was down at the Shakespeare festival in Asland Oregon. Unfortuntately we rode Motorcycles down there from Portland. Riding back the next day in the Summer heat was not pleasant. :-(

You must be using VPN? Otherwise this would not be free.

Back when I had a Google Voice account, calls cost me a penny per minute.

I got food poisoning in New Orleans so long ago I was able to carry onto the plane my own 6 pack of bottles of 7up. Yes, I travel w immodium, I also discovered the only "food" that was tolerable the first day was mentos, a chewy peppermint candy

Yes, I use a VPN when outside the country. (I forget at times since it's connected all the time.)

Using the VPN allows me to make financial transactions safely and watch streaming services from the US.

In case anyone is interested, and I don't make any morney from them, but I switched to NordVPN a few months ago and it works great.
