We're going on a month-long trip through Amsterdam, Dubrovnik, and most of Finland later this summer. Our 18 month old daughter is coming with us. I'm wondering if there are "changing stations" in bathrooms in Europe, like there are in most public places in the U.S. If not, where/how do people change babies' diapers when out in public?
Jolee, this is not destination specific,, and it only works with younger babies( smaller size) but I found changing my kids was cleaner done in their stroller, I had a small portable mat to slip underneath child. Some of the washrooms I encountered all over, not specific place ,, well frankly,, I preferred not use washrooms.
Parks are great too , ( portable mat) . I always carried a supply of plastic bags to dispose of diaper in a bin somewhere.
I've never looked specifically for them, but I've noticed changing stations are quite common at least in Belgium and at the pay restrooms on the autobahn in Germany.
I admire all of you parents travelling with babies so much (there is another thread on the boot with someone travelling with an 18 month old).
I could barely handle a full grown husband and a teenage son. Good for you! Have a wonderful time.
P.S. I too did not see changing areas in the bathrooms in Europe the stroller idea is great.
So where do Europeans change their babies when out in public?
Generally, in the same places we do when we are away from home. In general, Europeans, at least in the west, are more socially advanced than in the US. I do remember a changing table in a restaurant washroom in Vienna. I only noticed that one because my niece had to change her son. There are probably changing stations in bathrooms everywhere, but unless you have a baby, who notices?
Euro babies need nappie changes too. I wouldn't worry about it, you will find places. Also, by the time toddlers are 18 mos, it should be possible to do "wet" diaper changes while they stand up.
Jolee,, why not just change baby in public,, I mean on a bench somewhere , obviously not at dinner table.
There are change tables in some places.
I know I have had to change my kids on our van floor and in strollers and on benches while travelling around States too!
Clean washrooms and change tables are not in every place when one needs to attend to a diaper.
What is prevalent are seperate changing rooms in many spaces: Malls, stores, train stations, airports, sometimes even restaurants. Since babies are often out with dad or grandpa, having the changing table in the ladies room doesn't work well. I do see these all the time in Frankfurt, so I imagine most larger cities will be the same. Smaller towsn, just ask the storekeeper or server in the restaurant where a good spot will be, they are sure to point you in the right direction.
If you aren't traveling with a baby, this is one of those things that you probably don't notice very much. They are there, but you probably walk right by without registering "seeing" them.
We took our 5-month old and just discreetly changed her on park benches and, as best we could, bathroom floors. We took a changing mat.
