Challenge

Put together your list of items of clothing that you would take on a four week tour of Europe. The restrictions are that you have no idea of the weather you might encounter and everything must fit into a carryon piece of luggage. List specific brands of clothes if possible and if you have a favorite piece of carryon luggage please include it on the list. You can also have one additional piece of carryon for your laptop.

But this IS how I pack so not a challenge. Excluding what I'm wearing on the plane which is a pair of Keen sandals, jeans, a turtle neck top and underwear, in my Timbuk2 laptop bag is a pair of smart wool socks, my 13"MacBook Pro, it's power chord and adapter, my iPod Touch, it's power chord, spare camera chip, travel journal, water, kleenex, wipes, some Clif brand bars, some zip lock bags rolled up together with a rubber band, and gum, a small colorful woven coin purse that holds my ear plugs, a tin of aspirin, couple of safety pins, a few twist ties, nail clippers, one packet of Air Borne, small pencil (like you get at IKEA or when golfing) and a tiny Ultra Bright Keychain flashlight. I'm carrying the Patagonia Waterproof Jacket with hood. Which will serve as my blanket on my overnight flight from LAX. Inside one of it's pockets are a pair of gloves.

We have traveled like this for a long time, from two weeks to six weeks. Three pants, four shirts, two or three pr. socks, two sets underwear, one pr, shoes, one rain jacket or coat depending on where we are going, cashmere sweater, headgear depending on where, toilet kit, shoe shine kit, electronics and peripherals, laundry kit, that's about it. In additional bag, camera, notebooks, meds both presscription and not, paranoia bag, metals bag, papers, tickets, guidebooks, etc. That's it. We've got it down to a knat's whisker. So, why do you want to know?

Here's what I usually take: Wear on plane: black cotton-blend pants, turtleneck or T-shirt and a long-sleeved "big shirt" {button up that can look a bit like a jacket}, water resistant winter coat with hood, good walking shoes - black. Pack in carry-on suitcase: 2-4 pair black or khaki cotton-blend pants (I am allergic to wool and rather hot-natured), 3 or 4 T-shirts/turtlenecks (depending on season) 1 or 2 "big shirts", optional 1sweaters/cardigan that go with all of above, 3-5 bras, enough panties for at least 1 week (often enough for entire trip) same with socks; hand wipes, stain wipes, first aid "kit" in a baggie- band-aids, small packets of Neosporin, dental floss, Advil or Aleve, Benadryl, Dramamine, Nyquil gel capsules, etc.), sewing "kit"( various colors thread wrapped around a small piece of cardboard, 2 needles, buttons, safety pins), medications, medical info sheet, copy of insurance info, 3-1-1 bag with deodorant, perfume, shampoo, lipstick, chap stick, toothpaste, etc., another quart baggie with eye shadow, blush, powder, comb, brush, tweezers, razor, clippers, etc. , "feminine supplies" if needed, wash cloth, gloves, hat or hooded scarf- if winter. Totally optional- scarves, phone, charger, adapter plug, camera & charger, extra memory cards, paper & pen, extra shoe liners, umbrella, day pack. Hubby gets by with a bit less - no need to duplicate first aid/sewing kits, etc. My suitcase will weigh about 14-15 lbs. and his will weigh 10 or a little less.
We even did an around the world trip with the same type stuff! It all fits in Rick's bags that we bought more than 20 years ago and that still look almost new. I carry a day pack and move stuff into it as needed- no computer needed.

I wash as I go, every night, so for 2 weeks or 2 month, my packing list would be the same. Here is my webpage on packing. For one night stands, I carry a ziploc bag for my washed clothes in case they are not dry in the morning, but that has never happened. It would be possible for me to go only with the clothes that I'm wearing. I've considered doing that just to prove a point, but so far I don't have the nerve to try it.

All mix match: - five or six tops (usually three button up shirts, two t-shirts) - two pairs of pants - one pair athletic bottoms (for use as ultra casual pant, pajama and/or something to wear down the hall to the bathroom) - one pair swim trunks that also work as walking shorts. - three pairs of socks, underwear (both are underarmor) - two pairs shoes (one more dressy and one more casual, both good for walking)
- two warm layers (non-bulky sweater, fleece, or soft shell) - one rainshell. Just back from all of April in Spain. Much colder and wetter weather than expected. At the last minute I changed to a wool sweater rather than synthetic (good call). The other good call was a soft shell for my other warm layer. It was warm, windproof and water resistant. All were needed. I probably could have used wool hiking socks rather than nylon crew socks and at least one pair of waterproof shoes.
