Central Europe budget Smart Trip itinerary

Hello,

as Austria is one of expensive country in europe, accommodation, food and attractions tickets are expensive, being backpacker traveler i have planed, as it is hard to skip Austria from bucket list, that is it smart way to visit Austria from Munich and bratislava as both cities are less expensive than slazburg and vienna and graz. as travel time is also less than hour from both cities. share idea if being accommodate in bratislava in slovenkia do day trip vianna and than graz, and do day trip from munich to salzburg it will cut the cost of expensive stays and food items in Austeria, and we can save handsome amount if do visit free walk tour hiking and free attractions and also do visit selected museums.

kind regards

The first time I visited Salzburg it was in a day trip from Munich so I can tell you that is very doable (and enjoyable).

There are many more things to see in Vienna so I am not so sure about it as a day trip. But perhaps you could get a taste that way. The architecture is beautiful and walking around costs nothing.

You have to consider the cost of transportation for day trips to visit these places. And more importantly, how much time is wasted in traveling back and forth.

We did not find Austria to be more expensive than Germany.

I'm the type who sets aside some money to travel but I don't let them determine what I'm going to do. Budgets are written in pencil and should only be used as guidelines.

It also sounds like the OP is more in the Lonely Planet/Let's Go travel category.

Edit - I just saw the LP/Thorntree discussion and I think that is how this ended up here

You might look more at Slovakia. Not Bratislava, but the heart of Slovakia. I suspect its the sort of place you would like & cheap.

You are on a budget, yet most of the places are sort of expensive. But, if those are the places you want to see, I agree, don't compromise, do them however you can.

When the time comes when you want to see parts of Europe where you can interact more at the same cost as this trip, then head East. But only if something in the East interest you.

Have you research the rail pass to ensure it is your best option? For some age brackets, it may be, but there are reservation costs that need to be added. Sometimes bus may work out cheaper (or even flights). I don't know this area of Europe, but do know transport requires homework.

France, Italy and austria and night trains cost reservation seats =, but regional and db, sbb train no need to reservation or less cost.
Flixbus are also available on pass. but it will cost more travel time.

Original comments deleted as they were deemed unhelpful.

Hope to read OP report about the trip after he takes it.

I suspect the Eurail Global Pass will waste a lot of money. You need to investigate what you'd pay by simply buying the train tickets you need. The Seat61.com website will tell you how to go about it.

I suspect buying individual tickets may save you enough money that you can afford to stay in at least one of the higher-cost cities rather than commuting back and forth.

joe32F, that's not constructive at all.

But I would suggest that the OP do some homework. Google hostels, restaurants for menus and prices, train fares, etc..... Build a spreadsheet and work it out. But with locations like Switzerland, Vienna, Salzburg, Venice you are going to be pressed to make it work in your budget.

You will save too, if you travel less. Pick a country and stay there.

acra and jeo frighten me without plausible logic, why it is not doable if travel nearby cities by fasted train on tight budget. my aim to enjoy eurpean train journeys, plus natural envrinment and city attractions why need to spend week and week in single city, as i want to do outdoor actvities rather stand in lines for entry in museums, castles and historical buildings, yeah i will do some of most recommended, but not every than move to next destination alongwith side trips.

A Global Eurailpass will almost certainly not be cost-effective for a bunch of short trips. Those things are priced so the rail companies can stand it for pass holders to take a lot of long trips.

15 or 22 days eurail pass cost around 500 to 700 $ and point to point tickets cost of 7 to 11 cities around 600 to 900 $ 1st Class category in both cases.

eurail pass except cost you free travel, except reservation on fast trains some of in austria, and give you peace of mind to purchase tickets as well as some deals on discounts within city transport in germany and swiss. flixbux also include in it boat rides

If your budget is as tight as you say it is, to the point that you feel you must choose the cities you sleep in based on the cost of their hotels rather than their convenience for sightseeing, the choice of first-class seating on European trains is a very unusual one. Few of us on this forum consider first-class train tickets a good use of our money. I will repeat my suggestion that you check out the Seat61 website. It has photos of first- and second-class carriages on trains so you can see how nice second-class is. Do not make this decision based on conditions in your home country.

They are having a sale on rail passes right now until the end of the month and they work out quite cost effective for the 15 day in 2 month flexi pass. At $485 that’s a little over $32 per travel day which some tickets can easily cost over that. The continuous passes only make sense if you are traveling every day during that time. If you use the Eurail planner app, you can search schedules and plan out your route and even filter to only show you trains without a reservation fee. It’s very helpful with planning.

I agree that the best way to get value out of the rail pass is with log journeys and/or lots of stops on the way to a destination. The rail app also allows you to plan routes “via” a city which helps with this. If you use your pass on the glacier express, even though you still will have to pay a high reservation fee, the pass saves you the cost of the ticket which is well over $100. Switzerland in general is great value on the pass and their trains don’t require reservations (except for specialty ones).

If you’re looking to save money, I highly suggest looking into Poland. It’s easy to get to from Berlin and Prague and is a super budget friendly destination. The Czech Republic and Hungry are also fairly cheap countries and much cheaper than the others on your itinerary.

I'm curious if you are in Berlin now since you said that's your start point. Or are you flying into Berlin to start your trip. If you are flying, did you factor in airfare into your budget? That can make a huge difference moneywise. For example flying from Arizona, my flight to Berlin or almost anywhere in Europe roundtrip would be almost half your total budget.
You might also look at monastery stays as an alternative to hotels. This site includes Austria and Slovenia besides Italy. https://www.monasterystays.com/
