Arrival in Vienna ( 4 nights).

  • Who can fault a trip to Vienna. Four nights is probably about right.

Train to Bratislava, take a rental car, head to Banska Stiavnica ( 1 night)
Leave Banska Stiavnica, stop Bojnice castle, and Cicmany. one night stop in Zilina.
Head to Tatras (stop in Orava castle and Vlkolinec. Poprad (our base for Tatras, Spiss and Levoca. 4 nights)

  • Love you are visiting one of Europe’s best kept secrets. But do me a favor, no trip report. We need to keep it a secret. In Banska Stiavnica look at https://www.grandmatej.sk/ . It is very “okay” and very well situated or a short visit to the town. Make it out to the mine if you can.

Krakow (4-5 nights). Auschwitz and Wieliczka salt mine

  • Excellent. but maybe 3 or 4 nights?

Leave Krakow, stop in Bardejov, Head to Kosice (2 nights)

  • Not sure I would spend two nights in Kosice but, okay. You might look at a night or two at the Hotel Palota in Lillafüred. A lot to do there that the kids might enjoy from caves to waterfalls to forest railways … and a castle not far in Miskolc.

Leave Kosice, Tokaj (Hungary), Eger (1 night)
Yup, two nights even.

Budapest (5 nights) . Daytrips to Szentendre and Esztergom

  • Sure. And that does leave time for Szentendre …. Maybe Esztergom.

Balaton (Balatonfured ?)

  • Hmmmm, to find a good place to stay you might have to go to one of the larger towns like Balatonfured, but for the “visit” go to Tihany. Really worth the effort.

Graz (1 night)

  • I havent been, but when I do finally get there … at least 2 nights.

7 nights in Austria, still have to figure those, Tyrol ? Salzkagermmut ? Wachau Valley ?

  • Not a big Austrian fan. Only been to Salzburg, one of the “bad” towns, Hallstatt and Vienna. Oddly enough loved Hallstatt despite the reputation. Vienna …. Eehhhh Just depends on what interests you.

Head to Brastislava, drop the car (2 nights). Take a bus, head to Vienna airport, fly back home.

  • Wonderful trip. But when you add in the extra nights here and there that I suggested, maybe you head straight back to Vienna from Hungary and save the rest of Austria for the next trip when you can do it well.

Graz is a good-sized place, and it is very pretty. I agree that just 1 night there seems a shame. However, I know you're very experienced at planning this sort of trip, so you may already have looked into what sights Graz features and decided a quick visit will be sufficient.

Acraven, i get lazy and forget to begin with "this is what I would do" because i know i am a bit odd and what I would do maybe relates to 10% of the RS group. But us 10percenters need representation too. It gets said a lot, but its really true, you cant do this stuff wrong.... only different. For instance, the OP has a wonderful drive planned .............. i dont drive [period].

If you have time in Austria with a car, I would consider driving the Grossglockner Road, which is beautiful, and you can spend some time in nearby Hohe Tauern park which is also a great spot for hiking. Between Innsbruck and Salzburg you can do Grossglockner Road and also the Eisrisenwelt (ice cave) and the salt mine in Hallstatt. Sounds like a great month, good luck with the planning!

MR. É:
Thanks for the answer/the help ! I can see that you are not a fan of Vienna ! We will see....
We have planned 2 nights in Kosice only because we will arrive there late aftenoon I guess since we will be coming from Krakow and that we will make as top in Bardejov. Maybe a night strolling could be enough ? We could put the other night in Tokaj or Eger.

ACraven.
Maybe we would do 2 nights in Graz then.....Maybe we could skip, Tyrol Region and go grom Graz to Salzkergammut region for 3-4 nights.

Cat VH: that road seem wonderful, we wpould do it if we go to Tyrol for sure...but we are not set on that one. Maybe we would keep it for an other trip...if an other trip we do !

I think Vienna is a place everyone that has the opportunity should see. Its one of Europe's great cities. To some people, a lot of people, it's among the best destinations of their life. I don't regret my visits.

I personally would opt for more time in Krakow than in Budapest, but autre temps, autre coeurs. I like the OP's itinerary.
