We will be traveling to Europe in two weeks and we are trying to make a decision about what to do with our phones. We both have verizon i phones. From what I hear, Verizon has the worst international plans. I would really like some sort of smart phone so that I have access to the internet for maps and navigating around. Does anyone know of something that can accommodate us???
Though this doesn't directly answer your question, I took my regular smartphone (not world phone) and used the internet and apps all the time on wifi. I found wifi virtually everywhere I needed it and there was no cost involved.
Jamie, Whether your Verizon iPhones will even work in Europe will depend on which model they are. AFAIK, the iPhone 4 does not have GSM capability, while the 4S model does. If you're using an iPhone 4S, you can ask Verizon about "unlocking" the phone, which will allow you to use it with either a SIM purchased locally or a SIM from one of the travel phone firms. The availability of locally-purchased SIM's which include data plans will likely vary according to which countries you'll be visiting. The travel SIM is an easier option, although they're not cheap (there's a cost associated with the convenience). If you need the names of some of the travel phone firms, post another note. Are you planning on travelling with two iPhones or just one? If you get one set-up with cellular data, you could use the other one with Wi-Fi only. Good luck!
