CDG question

Flying from SFO today on United connecting in CDG in Paris to Frankfurt, then Milan. Lufthansa. All one reservation.
Are bags checked to final destination, or do I need to get bag in CDG, then recheck?

Will I have to go through security in Paris?

If I miss my Frankfurt connection, and they put me on a later flight, the train and bus schedule is over for the day and I’m stranded at the airport (or forced to book hotel at last minute which will be expensive. What are the chances if I ask Lufthansa to put me up in hotel in Frankfurt and take flight the morning to Milan?

Thanks for any information

Your bag will go all the way to Milan either MXP (Malpensa) or LIN (Linate). When you checkin with the airline the passenger agent (at least when I worked as one) will tell you that and give you a claim check with that information. But if not ask them directly.

Will I have to go through security in Paris?

No, you will go through passport control and they will stamp your passport entry into the Schengen zone

If I miss my Frankfurt connection, and they put me on a later flight,......?

Yes, since this is "all one ticket" the airline is responsible for compensating you for the missed connection. They will put you in a hotel or on the next flight. However it has happened to me that I had to find my own hotel and then file a claim with the airline to get the money back.

Am I correct that the itinerary here is SFO-CDG-Frankfurt-Milan?

If so, this answer is only halfway correct: the OP has to go through both a security check and passport control in CDG. CDG requires connecting passengers arriving from a non-Schengen origin point (such as SFO) to re-clear security before going on to their connecting flight. This is a function of the terminal design in CDG. You then have to go through passport control to enter the Schengen area.

Yes flight is SFO - Cdg- FRA-Mxp
4 hour layover CDG
45 minute layer in Frankfurt. (Worried about delay with flight out of CDG) but both flights are Lufthansa and same terminal.
Next flight doesn’t arrive until after the last train has left to my destination train station.

Thanks for the info

45 minutes could be too tight for your luggage to be transferred to the Milan flight. Have a Plan B.

You might want to rethink checking luggage because Lufthansa may not deliver your bags to your hotel if you are taking a long-distance train. I would not check a bag given the 45 minute layover and the fact that you might have to return to the airport to retrieve your bags.

You're probably already on the plane, but I can attest to Lufthansa being organized in Frankfurt -- we did a short connection to Vienna and our bags showed up fine (and yes, I worried about it the whole trip SFO, right up until the bags came off the carousel in Vienna.)
Have a great trip!

Had to check luggage as I had big duffel bag. (Stocking up on some things not available here and brought our ski clothes with) Flight was late leaving Paris, but so was the flight to Milan. Lufthansa confirmed my bag was on the Milan flight. After delay in boarding and delay on tarmac, finally took off. But arrived too late to catch the last train with a bus connection. So plan B is a night at the Sheridan. Good rate tonight of only 119€.

Just an FYI, 45 minutes would have been fine with Inter Schenegen flights without delays. But since I was flying on miles, knew the connection was risky. I’ll be back home by 10 am tommorow though. And who can predict when which flights are delayed. Wouldn’t recommend 45 minute connection for vacation travel.

Thanks for the info. First time I’d ever connected in Paris

The bummer is I used the restroom before leaving the secure area in Paris after getting off the flight from SFO and realized two hours later I’d left my winter coat there. Couldn’t go back into that area, and didn’t have time to go to lost and found in terminal two. Too tired and forgot to take inventory.

Learnings- assume after international flight your brain cells are stupid. Every time you move; plane, restroom, security, waiting area. Know your number of loose articles and count. I’m a seasoned traveler and let my guard down. Guess a shopping trip in Milan. Hope they gave jackets that will fit a size 14ish American.

There is no way to predict delays even when the weather is superb. There can be equipment failures, crew issues, or drones like at LGW!

Would you connect at CDG again?

As horrible as leaving your coat airside was, it could have been worse. It could have been your passport or wallet. Your advice about keeping track of things is a great reminder to all of us whether we are seasoned travelers or newbies. I hope somebody who needs a warm coat found yours. :-)

Happy shopping in Milan!
