Is 1 1/2 hours long enough for a layover in either Paris or Amsterdam going from chicago to frankfurt? An amazing deal just popped up, and most of the time those either give you a 12 hour layover or 45 minutes. Does this seem doable? Would you choose one airport over the other for that amount of layover time?
If you miss the connection and it is the airline's fault they will just put you on the next flight to Frankfurt with available space.
But only book this amazing deal directly with the airline.
Don't if it is with a third party like cheapotickets.com
That is good advice. Thankfully, it is through the airline's website. I found the deal through Going app, but am booking directly. It's the lowest on our multi-city trip that I've found in 3 months.
Given this choice, I would opt to connect through Amsterdam rather than Paris. Easier to navigate than CDG airport and staff are more helpful. My experiences connecting through Paris have been dismal.
We often have short connectings thru Amsterdam. 1.5 hours would be long for us. We typically fly Delta with connected legs. If your flights are connected, the airline is responsible to get you to your destination on the first available flight. When we went to Krakow we had a 50 minute connecting. I could have changed the flights, but then the layover was five hours. We kept what we had knowing if we missed it, we get on the flight five hours later, anyway. If you are flying Delta, their flights often arrive early. We've never missed a flight, though we get to the gate well after boarding has started. Once, they were waiting for us to close the doors to the jetway.
I always know my arrival and departing gates and a mental map of the airport. Going to Frankfurt, you will have to go through immigration. Be assertive with getting advanced in the line if necessary. Last time we flew thru Amsterdam there were employees directing people with short connections to a sort of express line.
I would suggest using the plane restroom towards the end of your flight and don't stop in the airport for a drink or snack until you know you can get to the gate on time.
I've never really had problems at CDG, though when possible I opt for connectings thru Amsterdam, for a few reasons, including there are fewer strikes in Amsterdam.
I vote also for Amsterdam over Paris for this short connection.
With Paris you will have to change terminals so more walking. I timed myself a few years ago arriving on Delta into 2E, departing for Milan on AF from 2F. I started timing from the minute I stepped out of the plane door (I was in Comfort plus so deplaned just after Delta One passengers)- had a shuttle bus to the main 2E terminal as we were parked at a tarmac stand, and although I had not transited thru there before I kind of knew my way. It took 1h5M of steady walking (not running) to get thru the terminals and thru the Security line and Immigration line (in that order in Paris) to my new gate. I would not do 1h30m in Paris.
Amsterdam has a "fast lane" for short connections.
IF you can choose your seats, get as far forward as possible. IF you can go First Class or whatever it's called I'd do that too.
Thank you! I booked the Amsterdam layover. I've been dreaming of, planning and saving for this trip for myself, my husband, and our four kids for YEARS and I'm so excited that it's finally happening!

I wouldnt fret it in Amsterdam. Might be a bit nervous in Paris. Oooops, too late. Sorry.
Glad you found a great deal.
Unless you're traveling very soon, keep an eye out for schedule changes that may change your layover time. The airlines don't always advise you of these changes in a timely manner.
Oh! That's very good advice. Thank you!
Great! I'm glad you booked.
I agree with JeanM. Be sure to set up a schedule for yourself to check your reservations frequently. I do it about every 2 weeks until a month out and then check weekly. I fly Delta so I check on Sunday AM because I've read that they update their schedules on Saturdays. I am not sure if that is 100% true and don't know if there is a system for other airlines but do check to make sure your flights/seats/layover times are the same.
BTW, the staff at the Amsterdam Airport are almost all multilingual so you will have no problem figuring things out.
Relatively short connections always make me a bit nervous, but having said that we had a 6-plus hour connection in Copenhagen and were able to take a bus into town and do a walking tour. That was great even though it was raining cats and dogs.
