CDC Travelers' Health site

https:// wwwnc. cdc.gov/travel (not hot-linked, note the spaces)

I was surprised to find out that CDC recommends Hepatitis A vaccine for people traveling to Eastern Europe and "village" Greece and Germany - even if infrastructure seems modern. (Hepatitis A vaccine requires two injections 6 months apart, so get started as soon as you think you might be going).

The CDC Travelers' Health website above is a useful resource, no matter where you're traveling. If the advice on the "traveler" side is "talk to your doctor," try entering your destination on the "clinician" side of the page to find out what your doctor's advice is likely to be.

I received this vaccine years ago in anticipation of a trip to Honduras. The travel nurse said even living in the US people should get it. The unfortunate truth is many people don’t wash their hands.

Yes, I suspect that the hepatitis vaccine is recommended for just about any destination. The one I was given was a hepatitis A/hepatitis B combination. Which reminds me: I didn't have time for the second shot before my trip, so I need to go get it now.

Thanks for sharing the site and reminding all of us travelers to check in advanced for any travel vaccinations.

The hepatitis shots are part of the routine immunizations given to children and have been since my 22 yr old daughter was young. it might be helpful if the title of this thread was changed to "Hepatitis shots recommended for everyone".

I have just completed a round of Hep A and B shots (yes, three shotsl) for right here in Canada as well as around the world. A little bit costly, and a lot comforting.

Hep A is responsible for many if not most of those restaurant food-borne outbreaks in the US.

I had the Hep B series for free when I worked in healthcare. I have since had the Hep A series due to travel in Central/South America.

Having said that, my very own US city is experiencing a Hepatitis A outbreak. This can happen anywhere. If you have the option to do this, it may be in your best interests to do so.

While we're on the subject, my suburban area had an outbreak of whooping cough this summer. This is a very serious illness in someone who cannot be vaccinated due to age or compromised immune system, such as cancer. If you have not had a booster as an adult, please get one.

You don’t need both hepatitis A shots before a trip. One is good. The second shot is needed for lifetime immunity- a good idea if you like to travel.
