CDC Order for proof of COVID-19 Test or Recovery for all air passengers arriving in the US

FYI if you have not seen this from the CDC Website: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued an Order on January 12, 2021 requiring proof of a negative COVID-19 test or documentation of having recovered from COVID-19 for all air passengers arriving from a foreign country to the US. This Order will be effective on January 26, 2021 and published in the Federal Register soon.

The CDC order applies to U.S. citizens as well as foreign travelers. The test must have been conducted within 3 calendar days of the flight.

I see this as a positive, but....
It is not people arriving from abroad that are fueling the spread of this disease out of control. It is the overall behavior of the population. I won’t go down the political rabbit hole, but when suggested public health measures are followed, we make a difference together.

I find it shocking that some people still put momentary pleasure, comfort or convenience above the public good.

Anyone thinking of travel will now have to find testing locations in where ever they are going. I have an associated leaving the country in a few weeks, fortunately he can connect, coming and going, through Istanbul. Istanbul has what is reportedly a very efficient testing service in the airport. Something less than 3 hour turnaround. Its just a matter of scheduling a long layover.

The CDC also recommends a 5 day quarantine when you return and another test after that. I think that is smart and probably should be more than a recommendation; maybe a requirement.

The financial, physical and emotional cost of travel right now can be pretty high. Gives room for a lot of thought before moving forward with any plans. For me, long haul travel is off the table for the time being.

Yeah, but that's only because there are hardly any people coming from abroad since the borders were closed compared to normal pre-COVID travel levels. If you compare the tiny international travel numbers to the huge community spread numbers, of course the former is not a big factor. As soon as you open up flights and more people travel here, then you have more potential of seeding the virus, especially new strains. New York City was initially seeded from European travelers because, by that time (February or so), the virus had already spread from China to Europe (the scientists looked at the genetic makeup of the virus in NYC and determined its origins as European). I think the new policy is to not add to the already out-of-control community spread, and to make things worse. Australia has been so strict on this reseeding potential that their own nationals have trouble coming home from abroad and have been virtually stranded there until they allow them to trickle back in (they phase in the number that can come in at once to match available space in their quarantine facilities).

Anyone thinking of travel will now have to find testing locations in

Or how about giving travel a rest for a while, since we have over 4k deaths a day now (!) and severe issues in some hotspots like Southern California and others.

I had trouble finding really good numbers, but it appears to be on an order of magnitude of 40 million in 2020, and numbers appear to be rising, not going down (if someone finds better numbers ... please). So that's probably more than 40 million more tests over the next 12 months. That is a plus.

The financial, physical and emotional cost of travel right now can be pretty high. Gives room for a lot of thought before moving forward with any plans. For me, long haul travel is off the table for the time being.

I agree completely!

2019 Air Passenger Arrivals to the US - 122.25 million

I don't know where the 40 million figure for 2020 referenced in a prior post came from (no source was cited). There is always a lag in posting official government statistics due to data verification, QC/QA, etc. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (the US DOT's research arm) doesn't have data for 2020 posted yet. If it did, there would be a huge drop off after the grounding of flights from most of the world within the 1st quarter of the year.

But the 40 million sort of seems reasonable as I keep hearing travel is down about 2/3rds....... If the real number turns out to be 100 million, then thats 100 million tests.... I like that better. Thanks for checking me.

I don't know about what would happen to your mark, but I'm pretty sure NESA have said if you have flu-like symptoms or hayfever alergies etc, you should get a doctors certificate before the exams
